Minister Chazama happy ‘no life was lost’ on independence day celebrations

Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Cecilia Chazama, has said it is delightful that no life was lost during the thick of this year’s independence celebrations.

Chazama: Everybody was happy this year

Chazama said registering zero deaths was a sign that people celebrated responsibly and with sober minds.

The Minister also commended the Malawi Police Service (MPS) for conducting themselves professionally during the period.

“I am happy with how the celebrations went about. I think everybody was happy this year,” said Chazama.

According to Chazama, this year’s peaceful celebrations should set a precedence for the future.

“We don’t want a repeat of things like what happened last year,” she said.

Last year, dozens of people were injured while eight people were killed following a stampede that occurred after police fired teargas at civilians as they tried to enter the Bingu National Stadium (BNS) where they were supposed to be treated to a football match in celebration of 53 years of independence.

Police fired teargas after they failed to contain pressure from hundreds of people who forced themselves to enter the stadium.

Activists and rights groups immediately condemned the act, saying the stampede could have been avoided had the Police conducted themselves professionally.

This year’s independence celebrations began on July 5 with military and police parades.

It was climaxed by a national prayer service in Mzuzu State Lodge.
