He was speaking on Saturday at Nyambadwe Primary School ground when he donated various items to people affected by disaster.

Mutharika said the recent floods were as a result of climate change, hence the need for more and long lasting dykes.

“Since the floods occurred, my government has been looking for a solution to end such effects of climate change and one such idea is the construction of dykes across the districts to avoid a repeat of such incidents,” the President said.

He commended the South African government which  has deployed a 25-member medical team to support Malawi in treating people affected by floods.

The team arrived on Saturday through Chileka International Airport in Blantyre and has so far treated people in Chikwawa District, one of the worst hit.

The team is also transporting humanitarian support to hard-to-reach areas using their helicopter.

Mutharika expressed his gratitude towards the Chinese and American Government for the support rendered to Malawi in supporting affected households.

The President said government would continue rendering more support to all flood victims in the country, citing relief food that will be distributed in the next three months until people recover from the tragedy.

“I and the First Lady, we will donate our personal money and 1, 000 blankets to some flood victims any day from today,” he promised adding that, “In fact, the consignment has already arrived at Sanjika Palace.”

Mutharika assured affected households that government would ensure that all those who were left homeless with the floods benefit from the Decent and Affordable Housing Subsidy Programme popularly known as Malata and Cement Subsidy.

The Malawi leader  sent his heartfelt condolences to families who have lost their loved ones in the recent road accident which happened at Linthipe in Dedza on Saturday as well as at Kampepuza open market in Ntcheu on Friday by ordering a minute of silence in honour of the departed souls.

One of the floods survives in Ndirande, who lost a child; Maria Chikaphonya thanked the President and the First Lady for their support.

Blantyre City Council Chief Executive Officer, Alfred Chanza said more than 52, 000 people have been affected in Blantyre City alone.

Among the items donated by the President in Ndirande included rice, blankets, maize flour, buckets, salt and plastic sheets.

President Mutharika declared a State of National Disaster following the disaster that hit hard 15 of the country’s 28 districts and killed 56 people in the country. The number of affected districts has since reached 17.

  1. No time for dykes. I have watched the msonkhano of Chimulirenji in Zomba. Last time DPP had chikoka not now. Mind you DPP better start packing otherwise you are no gonna win and expect to build a dyke or any substandard zitukuko.

  3. I no longer take him seriously. He’s made too many promises which haven’t been fulfilled. Didn’t skc condemn one dyke constructed on DPP watch?

    1. What do you mean Chilima cautioned. What was his responsibility when he cautioned it. Who did he caution? Sometimes Other people think as chickens. Have you forgotten that when he cautioned he was on duty visiting those areas. Did he ask the contractors to do something. We shouldn’t forget that even if we had strong dykes, Mother Nature cannot be stopped. America, rich in all do experience this cyclones and property and lives are lost. Wake up from your sleep.

  4. Will two months be enough for you to construct the said dykes? The country goes to the polls shortly, so when do you think you will carry out those plans? Surely you don’t think you’ll be re-elected now, do you? Oh, Mr President. You’re deluding yourself that Malawians will vote for you!

  5. Kodi the last floods happened in 2015! This is not the first time malawi has been faced with crisis of this nature. That time you did not worry to build dykes because we already elected you. Now you want to promise to build them because you need our vote? where were you for last 4 years bwana? Too busy making money in uniforms and police packs! NEVER AGAIN SHALL WE MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE. NO THANK YOU DPP

    1. Infact it was floods that made him hate Chilima even more. He actually used his red carpet when he visited flood victims when Chilima was walking long distances to physically see the damages and meet the affected people himself.

  6. Bwana maliseche muthalika mwachedwa nawo malonjezo anuwa, nthawi inalipo yambiri yoti mupange zimenezi, mumadikira anthu afe kaye ndemudzinena zomanga ma dyke, Chilima anadzudzula kale zomanga ma dyke osalimbazo koma munazitenga zopanda nzeru nkumuchotsa pa udindowo nkumuika wakuba wa ku mwanza uja. 8. Maliseche has promised Malawians too many things unfortunately he does not have enough time to have them fulfilled. There are not many people above 80 years and he is bound to go to see his Allah. Now instead of concentrating on repentance and asking for forgiveness, he is busy stealing, lying and God knows what else.

  9. The right hand is not functioning normally. This man is hiding illness. This is a stroke striken arm. Unfortunately there are no medical examinations for presidential candidates. This man is dying slowly.

  10. Where were you been all these time?,How long have you been in Government? When did you know that climate have changed Mr old Man?you’re up for some thing

  11. How stupid and dumb is he? Wasn’t it the first advice SKC gave for the DPP gurus to start sidelining him (SKC) from the party fir having said the truth and open a can of worms after the party allegedly embezzled money for construction of a ridge (mzere wa mbatata) rather than a dyke.

    1. Some people are not sincere and royal to the president. There are just up eating money and don’t care whether what the president says makes sense or not.
Same people were arguing dykes cannot work with natural disasters. That no structure can withstand natural disasters, but 24 hours down the line they advising the president to say exactly the opposite.
Build dykes. But we know all they to pocket the money from fake structures.

  12. ANALI KUTI NTHAWI YONSEYI. AMADIKILA ANTHU AFEPO KAYE???? SKC ADANENA KALE ZA POOR WORK ON THIS DYKE BUT HE NEVER LISTENED BECAUSE ANADYAPO NDALAMA. MAPETO AKATANGALE NDI AMENEWA. THE LEADER NEEDS TO HAVE A VISION THAT CAN PREVENT THE LOSS OF LIVES OF HIS/HER PEOPLE NOT COMING WITH A VISION AFTER LIVES HAVE ALREADY BEEN LOST.

  13. Kodi mumanga zingati masiku atha kale inu.
Anthu akudikira Mombela university ku mzimba . Nanga stadium ya bullets. Nanga ya Noma.
