Mutharika names Cabinet, Mwanamveka new finance minister, Ben Phiri in: Goodall, Uladi, Daza, Jeffrey included as aides

President Peter Mutharika has named his 29-member cabinet, the first in his second five-year term of office, nearly a month after the controversial elections that brought him to office.

Back in Cabinet: Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamvekha  with Minister of Foreign Affairs Francis Kasaila.

Mutharika, who  was sworn in on May 28 and inaugurated on May 31 following his declared victory in the May 21 Tripartite Elections, has appointed his former agriculture minister  Joseph Mwanamvekha, an economist and former banker, to be the country’s purse keeper as Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development.

Mwanamvekha moves from Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development where he was credited with boosting food security through surplus harvests of maize, Malawi’s staple grain.

He replaces Goodall Gondwe, who has been the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development for a decade.

Gondwe has not been given ministerial position but he is named in the Cabinet list as special advisor on finance and development.

Mwanamvekha is appearing as third-in-command on the protocol list of the Cabinet released by Chief Secretary to the government Lloyd Muhara as seen by Nyasa Times.

Second-in-command, Vice President Everton Chimulirenji has been given the ministerial duties responsible for disaster, relief management and public events.

Government spokesperson is now Mark Botomani, who has been appointed as Minister of Information, Civic Education and Communication Technology.

Mutharika has brought back several other old faces, including Jappie Mhango   as health and population minister and Kondwani Nankhumwa to take care of agriculture, irrigation and water development.

The President picked another former minister, Francis Kasaila, to man the ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation, Nicholous Dausi retained as Minister of Homeland  Security while Bright Msaka SC is now Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.

New faces in the cabinet include Ben Malunga Phiri who is taking care of local government and rural development, and Ibrahim Salim Bagus in industry, trade and tourism.

Others are Symon Vuwa Kaunda who was assigned the lands, housing and urban development and Dr William Susuwele Banda who will be responsible for the education, science and technology portfolio. Martha Lunji Mhone Chanjo was given the ministry of labour, skills and innovation, while Ralph Jooma is the minister of transport and public works.

The President has also appointed Mary Thom Navicha as Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Bintony Kutsaira as Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining.

Francis Phiso has been named Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture.

The Cabinet has five deputy ministers who include lawyer Chipiliro Mpinganjjra as deputy minister of defence, Esther Majaza as deputy of local government while Martha Chiuluntha Ngwira is deputy for education.

Others are Charles Mchacha for transport, Grace Kwelepeta for gender and Mungasulwa Mwambande for Natural resources.

The President has maintained prominent lawyer Kalekeni Kaphale as Attorney General and appointed new aides who include Uladi Mussa as special advisor on parliamentary affairs, ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) secretary general Grezelder Jeffrey as special advisor on women affairs while president of Depeco party Dr Chris Daza is special advisor on governance.

Mutharika had come under growing criticism over the delay in appointing his cabinet.

MALAWIANS,there is no need for celebrating inauguration of the dead cabinet.What can Mwanamveka run one of the knowledgeable cabinet in the country together with an imaginable rotten Ben Phiri Uladi,Daza and including Jeffrey Wa Jeffrey dirty prostitute who once castigated the Northerners that,they will never rule Malawi until Jesus comes.It is pure the Cabinet of the misguided Lomwes plus their god Mathanyula who has destroyed our country economically and politically.The choice Muthalika has made,is exactly what he is himself and what do you expect from this moron who was rejected by the students of the Washington University in the USA.I remember very well when we were running the exiled Party under the leadership of one of the brightest political leaders.Chipembere and his ex Ministers who parted from idiotic and corrupt Hastings Banda.Muthalika at one stage,told Chipembere not to send many Tumbukas to abroad Universities as these people are dominating political and economic sphere in Malawi.Bullshit as he is,he does not even know who formed Nyasaland African Congress, he does not know who formed Malawi Congress Party.Both these two people,Levi Zililo Mumba and Orton Chingo’li Chirwa were at the fore front.After John Chilembwe the briliant leader of our time.Chilima did not like the quota system that bloody Banda introduced to undermine the innocent people of the North.Now,I think millions of our brothers from the South and Central now realise that Norherners are not easy to be cowed down.As Muthalika has been put into power again,nothing will satisfy the Northerners and that this brainless thief,will steal our resources as much as he wishes for his last trip to the USA WHERE HE STASHED THE STOLEN FUNDS FROM OUR POOR PEOPLE and bear in mind that this idiot has never either fought for our freedon or multiparty struggle,in short,he is enjoying from what he had never planted.WAKEUP MALAWIANS AVOID KOMA TIYEYES.One Malawi,one nation and ALUTA CONTINUA.

Very good team Mr. President YES!!! this is the begginning of prosperity good things will never come easily but you should stand firm be strong the LORD Almighty will fight and defeat ALL your enemies – they will come as one but they shall free away in many directions. Once again never be afraid go on with your development agendas and and be focused. The whole world has now see how wicked Pastor Chakwera is he fights using blood of innocent people but he shall never rule this Nation because the LORD denied him long time ago.
    I personally convey my sincere prayers to the newly appointed cabinet that they shall work and perform wonders so that the opposer shall be put to shame, God protect them ALL and bless them with your wisdom in Jesus’s name.

  21. Congratulations Honourable MARK BOTOMANI on being appointed Minister of Information, Civic Education and Communication Technology. As a former college mate and someone we met in some elective courses/classes at ABC, I am glad that God has, in this appointment by His Excellency Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika, fulfilled what He had ordained ages before you were born – predestination.

    I wish you all the best as you continue to labour in God’s vineyard to His glory and honour. Remember that the LORD Jesus you accepted as your LORD and Saviour is unchangeable and as Christians we are called to be Christ-like. You will therefore continue to be in the world but not of the world. Jesus Christ through Apostle Paul calls us not to conform to patterns of the world but that we should be transformed by the renewing of our minds. May you be light and the salt as you serve God and the people of Malawi in the portfolio you have been given.

  23. So this is what you come up with after a thorough background check of the candidates? Combination of nyusansi? All I see is the same people whose character and record cannot be alienated from the bucketful scandals the DPP party has under its belt. What kind of vetting could not see the rot in Uladi, Goodall, Nankhumwa, etc? To add salt to the wound the most senior positions have gone to the MTL belt for obvious reasons; to steal as much money as they can before they are kicked out of the government. Cry my beloved country!
