DPP organizes blue parade for Mutharika arrival in Lilongwe

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has organised a blue parade as a heroes’ welcome for president Peter Mutharika as he arrives back from the US where he attended the UN general assembly.

Chief secretary to the Office of the President and Cabinet Lloyd Hara says Mutharika arrives at 1:30pm through Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe.

He arrives back to face same old politicial, economic and social problems he had left a week ago; a political whirlwind following highly disputed election, a wave of protests including anti-Jane Ansah and anti-quota system protests as well as a sharply divided nation on regional and tribal lines.

The party says after vice president Everton Chimulirenji  – who was acting president – welcomes the President and he inspects the guard of honour, the DPP cadets will join Mutharika in a blue convoy from the airport to the gates of Kamuzu Palace.

President Mutharika left the country quietly last week, without the usual presidential sirens as the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) sanction anti-Jane Ansah protests were raging in the city.

The DPP’s decision to hold the blue parade, if approved by state security agents, will be a show of defiant, arrogance and impunity in the heightened political atmosphere.
