Mutharika warns politicians against dividing people on cultural lines
President Peter Mutharika has warned people to be on the look-out against politicians whom he accused of using culture or culture identity to divide people.
Mutharika said this at Chonde in Mulanje during the commemoration of Mulhako wa Alhomwe annual cultural festival.
“Politicians should not use culture to send people to beat or kill other people, that is not Malawian,” said Mutharika.
Mutharika’s sentiments come at a time when the president himself has come under intense criticism for using the Mulhako wa Alhomwe to promote his political agenda and that of his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
During the occaassion, Mulhako wa Alhomwe chairman Leston Mulli openly said he is political and supports President Mutharika and his DPP.
Mutharika urged Malawians to be peaceful and love each other.
“I know there are some people who don’t want peace. They have gone on rampage destroying schools, burning them,” he said.
He then asked his supporters not to retaliate when attacked by people sent by what he called failed and frustrated politicians.

Since the launch of Mulhako by the late President Bingu, this establishment has been marred with favoritism/ tribalism. It’s very clear they remain unrepentant of tribal politics. They’re cannot speak healing when they’re a cause of the current political impasse. You cannot advise other politicians when you still practice tribalism.
This is not a cultural celebration but a political gimmick …Remember Nansete,a Lhomwe chief neglected for talks with Chakwela and we all know the rightfull paramount is the youthful Chimaliro but because he is not blue,green or red that is why he stays on the sidelines. Culture from the word “cult” is a private practice for a particular group of people and it is not a competition. Lomwe people must stand out and speak against partisan politics because these politicians are using the tribe for a bad end. At the end of a day DPP and Lhomwe are becoming inseparable terms.
This fool called Peter Hitler Mutharika thinks Malawians are stupid. The Lomwelization of Malawi was started by Bingu Mutharika who told Malawians that Lomwe will be introduced in schools nationwide. Peter Hitler Mutharika want first to make sure all the security and military is fully controlled by Lomwes and implement the agenda that they have. So, who is dividing who along the tribal lines? I think it is Peter Hitler Mutharika himself. As long as this old mandala is in power Malawi will never be the same. This guy has already started a tribal and regionalism war. If ever they’re tumbukas in other regions as you put it here, it could be that they are the most qualified to do the jobs that other malawians can’t do. The Mlakho wa a Lhomwe has brought further divisions and anger among other tribes in Malawi. As a Lhomwe myself, the Mlakho thing is a very bad idea; the special treatment given to a Lhomwe today will one day backfire. Power will not last forever. Other tribes will one day rule and they will want to revenge, bringing further divisions. My fellow Lhomwes who are enjoying this special treatment today can not see this. One day the tables will turn, and the Lhomwes will be the last in the queue. This cycle will continue until a capable leader comes onto the helm.
DPP politicians are the most daft bunch of people out there. Tribal/ethnic wars don’t just start. Things start slowly as it is happening now in Malawi. No one in DPP appears to understand history of ethnic wars. Rwanda in 1994, Iraq, Uganda, Yemen, DRC, Sudan, Angola and many other examples.
If our Leaders, had even 50% of your thinking, Malawi would have never been the same, unfortunately they are blind beyond reverse. Money has eaten their brains to the core.
