Beleaguered Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah has told the Parliamentary  Public Appointments Committee (PAC) inquiry  that she was intimidated by main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) monitors at the National Tally Center before announcing the May 21 2019  presidential results.

PAC is holding a court instituted inquiry to establish the capacity of the commission to hold fresh elections following the Constitutional Court’s nullification of the Tippexed presidential election.

Responding to a question whether MEC had scrutinized all the results sheets before announcing the winner, Ansah, a judge of the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal said they and that all party monitors had already been served with the results sheets and results.

“By the time of announcing the results, all the results sheets had already been scrutinized. All the party monitors had already been served with the results. I remember UTM monitors noted that their presidental candidate Dr Saulos Chilima’s total had a deduction of 400 000 votes, an anomaly which we corrected.

“MCP monitors led by [Elsehower] Mkaka, Chimwendo [Banda],  [Silvesetr James] Ayuba  and others also had an audience with me where they intimidated me that I should not announce the results and if I go on there will be blood in the country. I confronted Ayuba who later knelt down and appologized, so too with Chimwendo,” she said.

Among other things,  Ansah corraborated with a Commissioner Linda Kunje that tippex was only used as a correction fluid and not a tool to change the results.

By using tippex, Ansha said no law was brocken by the presiding officers but that it helped to uphold the rule of law.

However, Ansah’s claims of MCP intimidation comes as State vice-president and UTM Party presidential hopeful Saulos Chilima is on record to have made stinging and blistering attacks at Ansah, alleging she told staff at the pollster that they should help President Peter Mutharika win the election.

Chilima signed the letter containing  evidence of misconduct by Ansah the head of the electoral body.

In a leaked letter seen by Nyasa Times calling for Ansah resignation as MEC chair, Chilima said she specifically mentioned that she did not want MCP president Lazarus Chakwera to be elected because his running mate –Mohammed Sidik Mia –  is a devout Muslim.

Chilima alleges Ansah led a pro-Mutharika members of the electoral commission into celebrations when the “bogus results” started showing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader was leading.

“You attended a private celebration party for professor Mutharika and his supporters and followers,” says Chilima, the former corporate executive -turned-politician .

The Constitutional Court ruling established that the 2019 voting process had been marred by serious irregularities.

Ansah-led  commission had also failed to address complaints before announcing results. Tally sheets lacked monitor signatures and several accepted tally sheets that had been corrected using Tipp-Ex.

The court annulled the election and called for fresh elections within 150 days from February 3 2020, a judgement which Ansah is appealing at the Supreme Court of Appeal.

  1. If there was a person who had maximum security at the time of elections ndi Jane Ansah. Therefore what she is saying is total rubbish. If it’s not kicks of a dying horse, then akungofuna public sympathy which unfortunately ngakhale Seodi White can’t do it this time around.   3. Take it or leave it, a day will come when we will remember her. Justice Dr. Jane Ansah is legendary. It is evident enough that she did nothing wrong really. The politics of hate and intimidation is what is ruining and compromising radical thinking. I feel sorry for the destitute of rationality on these elections matters portrayed by the majority of Malawians. Justice is justice irrespective of numbers, and this is one thing the current case rulling seem to have overlooked so far. The habbit of being quick to judge compromises the need for a thorough investigation which is key in any democratic society. The so called mismanagement attributed to MEC is in essence a non-realistic claim and misplacement of blame at large. That does not in any way solve the real issues that need to be addressed. Even if fresh elections were to run in the next 150 days, I can only imagine which newly appointed MEC Commission would make a significant difference from the incumbent. There are real issues that need a proper scrutiny from all perspectives including the perspective of MEC. Equating justice to “provocative people’s” expectations is no justice at all. One day, we will remember her in the same way I am convinced that Malawi will take a very long time before it sees another leader at par with Bingu.

    2. This is very true. You could hear the hatred and anger in the voice of PAC members trying to intimidate Jane. Malawi is in more mess now that it has ever been. We are setting a bad precedence which many that are cerebrating today, will soon cry

  4. I have never listened to such useless MP s. If there will be fresh elections ,these buch of MPS will be out. Better Kaliati to bounce back. Some if you are saying Peter should go. It’s ok but very soon you will cry for Peter but it will be too late.Mark my words.

  7. The law and court decision is one thing, to hold a credible and fair election another…-
    But puplic opinion, the voice of the majority of people in Malawi is clear and loud!
    Peter and his allie Jane Ansah together with their associates have to go!
    We don’t want them! We need a fresh and complete overhaul in all sectors of our society!

  11. Our MPs are the worst bunch of people Malawians have trusted with power. They do not even understand the current laws, how can they make new laws or improve old ones? Listening to the inquiry, Jane was very patient for she had to take lots of dull and unintelligible questions from a bunch of persons who are there only for allowances and political gain.

    1. The worst people in life are those who claim or portray as if they are victims yet they in fact the
      very horrible perpetrators of atrocities or injustice. In history almost all dictators share that reputation. (Hitler used holocaust to cleanse Germany, recently Al Bashir in Darfur)

  15. Its time Malawians heard from Ansah. I think she has been condemned enough prior to hearing her side of the story. She has been hanged without trial.Yet there three sides to a story ‘your side, her side and the truth. So far we have only heard their side of the story. The enquiry is good platform but also the supreme court must hear her testimony under cross examination and determine the truth.

Secondly, if her organisation cleared all the electoral sheets, why did her lawyers fail to defend the same during the hearing? Or else, why didn’t she come to assist her team to defend the same?   19. Land mark ruling that has liberated Malawians. The whole country became peaceful and joyful meaning that this is what Malawians were waiting for. I know Jane Ansa waphwisila mpando akango choka zingwe basi. There is no way a person like him clinging to a position like that she is mad.

    1. No there is peace because the people who voted for APM are peaceful while all of you behind MCp, UTM, PP, Fredom Parties plus HRDC are not peace lovers. If the ruling had favored MEC u would have gone to streets as you have been preaching. So bravo to DPP supporters and others for maintaining and that there leader including MEC are following the rightful procedures to appeal otherwise DPP supporters would have gone to streets against the ruling but its not the case. One thing you should know is that not all Malawians are behind the nullification of results or demos. U should not mislead Malawians my friend.
