About 32 members of Parliament from Malawi Congress Party (MCP)  and independent benches have met  Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima asking him to lead a grand coalition in a fresh presidential poll ordered by the Constitutional Court, Nyasa Times understand.

The members of parliament were led by Deputy Speaker Madalitso Kazombo and Kasungu South East MP Khumbidze Kandodo over the weekend.

“Yes it’s true they met. They asked for an audience and asked him to lead an alliance against the DPP. The MPs say they don’t think Dr Lazuras Chakwera can win votes across the country unlike Chilima,” said a source who said the meeting lasted two hours.

The MPs mainly from Kasungu, Dowa, Salima, Northern Region, Mchinji and Dedza say they believe Chilima has better chance to defeat the DPP.

This new twist now escalates the divisions in the main opposition as most of its senior officials from its Central Region base have already dumped party vice president Sidik Mia openly, a position they are advocating to give to Chakwera in an electoral alliance.

Others are pointing fingures at businessman Simbi Phiri who has been working with former MP Rhyno Chiphiko to bring Chilima to lead the MCP.

However, insiders from Chakwera’s base claim founding president Kamuzu Bandas family which includes Kazombo, Khumbize Kandodo and former Minister Ken Kandodo are working to oust Chakwera and return presidency to Kasungu.

Chakwera and Mia are yet to make a statement.

  4. I am a Chilima man but here I don’t agree. My fellow Malawians (DPP members and supporters excluded of course), I have two points to make here:

    1. It is the unity created between the two parties during the court case that won us the case. Let us not divide ourselves now and by so doing give an opportunity to the thieves to rob us again. Yes, they can do it in the midst of our confusion.

    2. Let us simply go by the numbers that we scored in the annulled election. Let Chakwera lead, Chilima follow as running mate and the rest of us support this set up, including, hopefully, Bwana Mia.

    I rest my case.

    1. You have not rested your case bwana. You have not yet told us why Chilima can not be better as president. I do not know if you have looked at the two parties manifestoes. Personally, I want accelerated development, and UTM has that element in its manifesto. Secondly, the nullified results do not present at all the correct scores, that is why they were nullified. Chilima got more that what those tippexed figures say. I think I can rest my case now. 😉 What do you think?

  8. This is all the work of DPP destabilizing MCP through Chilima – DPP is happy. What Malawians should know is that the biggest enemy of Chilima, at least in his mind, is MCP and not DPP. He hates MCP to the bone. All he wants to see is MCP falls down. Why? because they rejected him in the May-21 elections regardless of a ruthless campaign he displayed in the central region. People just brushed him off because his whole campaign lacked political cause. Moving forward he does not imagine staying out of power for the next 5 years. He will retire from active politics. His party too will retire. UTM cannot survive as an opposition party at least not with MCP in power. As an opposition leader, he will not have much to discredit the MCP and that he does not want to imagine. Now, what does Chilima want? He wants the presidency with the support from MCP MPs. Will he succeed? I doubt because MCP is a solid party, especially on the ground. Once the masses realize that they are being led away from Chakwera, they will revolt against their own MPs. People love Chakwera for his character and that’s what the misinformed MPs should know. Such MPs should not be surprised when they lose their political grip in their respective constituencies. We have seen the same mistakes before, in fact from the same MCP. Please do not be misled, at this moment in time the mighty MCP has the trust of the people with Chakwera as president not otherwise. You dare get confused, DPP will be the winner. Wake up MCP!

    2. “People love Chakwera for his character” Which one? The one of boycotting parliament only to change his mind after the court ruling instead of just saying that he could not have been able to prepare for court and attend parliament at the same time. The same elections he went to court for is the same he is accepting the MP post for just because he won??

  9. You wonder why people chose to be unstable all the time. When everyone though MCP is united and strong. When we all thought MCP is like to form the next government there comes another whirlwind of confusion. We all know Lazarus Chakwera is a strong leader who has managed to amass national support with Mia as his running mate. Let him lead the touted grand coalition. Chilima can come in as a minor and indeed he is. This guy destabilizing a large political party like MCP is unfortunate. It means as Malawians we do not have principles, we do not fear God and we can sell ourselves so cheaply. Think twice and twice again then you will know what to do. I for one a true supporter of MCP can see that things are not right somewhere!

    1. So you are basing on the vote figures which were altered? What about if Chilima was on position one but his votes were altered? Think wisely, the results of 2019 were nullified.

    As for the MCP presidency reverting to Kasungu, please note that MCP is a National Party not a family affair. Why don’t you test this issue at the next convention? After all Chakwera’s leadership period is coming to an end. Otherwise we may end up with another Kaliwo/Msowoya saga at a time when all effort should be directed towards sending DPP into oblivion.   31. This is not a good development, why not hold an extra ordinary meeting to agree on one thing. This division will cost MCP a fortune and I dont think Chakwera and Mia will accept to be sidelined without a fight.

    However they once got United just to eliminate Jesus but they failed. They regretted for their evil Aliance. This is exactly what is going on between UTM and Mcp.
    Chilima got many votes from Eastern and Southern Region . These were refugees from DPP. These same refugees are totally against Mcp because of its blood thirsty from the past history which Mcp targeted the Southerners.
