No comment!  Sulking Ansah refuses to take Malawi  reporters’ questions over MEC job

Embattled Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah Wednesday  dramatically refused to take journalists’ questions who wanted to ask her about her future at the commission following Supreme Court of Appeal ruling which generally upheld the verdict of the Constitutional Court in the Presidential Election case.

Ansah refused to step down, arguing she didn’t do anything wrong

She just waved away the hordes of the journalists who swammed her at a high level elections meeting, the national consultative for electoral stakeholders in Mangochi.

Ansah turned her  back and walked away as reporters’ shouted questions at  her.

“Are you going to resign, if so when?” shouted one Nyasa Times correspondent.

The journalists finally gave up to force her to speak.

The Supreme Court ruling upheld a Constitutional Court ruling which ordered a fresh election after annulling the May 21, 2019 polls following widespread anomalies and irregularities.

Ansah told the media before the Supreme Court ruling that she would resign as chair of MEC if the courts found that her commission mismamaged the May 2019 elections.

In the meeting, some members were against allowing state broadcaster MBC to make a presentation on its plans for campaign and polling coverage.

But MEC director of media Sangwani Mwafulirwa said that MBC was invited because it has a constitutional mandate to cover elections according to the parliamentary Act that governs elections.

There were also heated and emotional moments during the meeting.

Chairperson for Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament Kezzie Msukwa and secretary general of Peoples Party Ibrahim Matola asked Ansah to explain why she went ahead to set presidential elections on July 2 when she knew that the power to do so lies with  Parliament.

Msukwa said parliament set May 19 as a date for fresh polls, but Ansah quashed the date and opted for July 2.

He accused MEC of confusing and holding Malawians to ransom through changing of electoral dates, which he describes as unfair.

But calm looking Ansah said MEC did not use the date set by parliament for fresh elections because the bill containing the dates was not assented to by President Peter Mutharika.

She said in the absence of that, the commission settled for July 2 in line with Constitutional Court ruling.

She denied that the Commission was misleading or holding the country the country to random.

  8. At first I thought that munthu wotamba amayenda pa lichero lokha komanso usiku wokha. But what this woman is doing is not different from a witch.

  9. If a person can keep a promise like that…how can we trust her with another round of elections? Peoples property was damaged during demonstrations to force her out. The courts have vindicated the people who were asking her to resign for gross incompetence. What else does she want?
    The problem is she has a delusion that she did a good job and everyone who says to the contrary is wrong!
    It means she will make the same mistakes next time nd she will not change!

  10. I feel this Jane Ansah has reached a point where she has stopped thinking. She has seen or done a lot of evil things. How can a justice of appeal not stick to her words. I doubt if there are Malawians who still trust what comes out of her mouth. All these things are happening because APM is afraid of Covid-19 to come in public and campaign.

  12. In a normal democratic country, no individual, regardless of a position he/ she holds, including the president, is above the law. Every law should be supreme as lighthouse that guides the way we handle ourselves and the positions we hold for the good of the nation, not as a tool to protect our own interests and for those who choose to hold the country at a ransom. The culprit is our constitution that gives too much power to the president that he thinks he’s the law himself not a guardian of the law. Muntharika and Ansah are doing this to force the opposition to boycott the elections so he can automatically win, (the Kenyan style) that’s why dpp has been mocking the opposition as to why they submitted nomination papers to someone they claim not to recognise. If that’s the case, then why Muntharika himself submitted his nominations for the same elections he claim to have won fair and square, why didn’t he boycott ?
    Or is it time for us the citizens to rise up and remove these criminals as the law of land has dismally failed its purpose?

  14. So if MEC set 2 July in line with concourt ruling why does she want to change the date now?

    The Supreme Court judges only said that they are agreeing with the 150 days set by the concourt thought the rerun should have been held within 60 days so there is no need for MEC to make a u-turn on the 2 of July date now.

    The bottom line is that Jane thought that she is smart on law but she has been found out by her fellow judges that she as incompetent and as evil as they come.

    1. Her contract expires on June 30 and if the elections will be held on July 2 she will not be the chair of MEC and that alone makes Jane Ansah and DPP shake ! Without Jane Ansah at the helm DPP is as good as buried!!

    I think this woman isn’t Malawian,,we need pipo who can dig her history she isn’t Malawian.

  16. Yet she was busy fielding questions from a Voice of America (VOA) Radio interviewer later in the same day. Her main response to the question whether she’s ready to resign was that…”as I haven’t read the Supreme Court of Appeal judgement yet, I’m unable to give you a definitive response….” (or something to that effect). Seriously??? I’m not only baffled but also flabbergasted at the arrogance of this lady…a Supreme Court Judge to boot and purportedly a “Bishop” in her church. Fellow Malawians, what manner of a woman is this; and where is her husband who should be pumping some sense into her, advising her “to let go”???? I rest my case.

  24. To the people of Malawi. Why is this lady still parading as MEC Chairperson after Supreme Court determination on the case while all the citizens are watching. This is a clear sign of plans to rig the fresh presidential elections again. All is because Presidential Council was not put in place on 3 February 2020 let alone on 8 May 2020

  25. It is surprising that the courts and opposition still think using tippex in parliamentary and local government elections is OK. Jane Ansah should ignore these foolish and power hungry people.

  26. The Supreme Court did not annul parliamentary and local government poll results. This means there is no reason for Jane Ansah to resign.

  27. Bullies in the media and opposition should leave Jane Ansah alone. Supreme Court did not annul parliamentary and local government elections. So, Ansah can stand tall and remain as MEC chair.

  29. Ansah so u mean Muntharika only quashed 18 May proposed by Parliament and not quashing 2 July bcoz it was proposed by a girl friend Jane Ansah?
    And now u need the same Parliament to approve different day of your dream together with your boyfriend, is it fair u think??
    Think like normal person Ansah and not like a person with unsound mind.
