DPP takes reality check as opposition party, to hold indaba
Former governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) says it will hold its National Governing Council meeting after the remains of their founding president Bingu wa Mutharika are buried, in order to map a way for a convention to “democratically elect leaders.
The party has also taken a reality check and told all its supporters, many who are defecting to the ruling People’s Party to accept that they are now in the opposition.
DPP Secretary General Wakuda Kamanga said the party politburo will meet after Mutharika’s burial to ” plan on how we proceed from here.”
“We will also go to the convention to elect new positions and we are ready for that,” Kamanga said Sunday in Zodiak’s Tiuzeni Zoona program.
He however said late president Mutharika’s brother, Peter, inherited the presidency of the party.
Kamanga said Peter Mutharika’s position will be rubber stamped at the convention.
The DPP has been related to the opposition after President Joyce Banda ascended to the top job following the demise of Mutharika.
Banda was a surprise choice when Mutharika made her his running mate in 2009. But DPP expelled Her Excellency Banda from the party, prompting her to form PP.
DPP could have been in government now if they did not sack Banda.
After Mutharika died April 5, the government took two days to confirm his death. The delay had led to speculation DPP were trying to prevent her from becoming president. Banda was sworn in April 7 to complete Mutharika’s second term, which ends in 2014.
“May be it was God who fired her from the party. What else can we say on what has happened,” said Kamanga when pressed if DPP were regretting giving Banda the boot.
Meanwhile, DPP Campaign Director Ken Zikhale Ng’oma also said DPP must accept that “we are now in opposition but as a party we will do our best to remain strong.”
Many member of the DPP, at parliamentary, national, regional and grassroots have dumped the party even before Mutharika has been put to rest.
