Govt threatens to withhold pay cheques for striking teachers

Government says it will withhold April pay cheques for teachers who fail to return to classes by April 12.

Teachers on strike will forfeit salary

A government official said the government team which is leading negotiations with Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM), has already communicated the stand to TUM executive during a meeting which took place in Lilongwe on Thursday.

Our sources say the meeting, which was also attended by Malawi Congress of Trade Union leadership, ended without a resolution as government maintained its stand of no risk allowances for teachers, while TUM insisted on continuing with the sit-in until government changes its decision.

TUM President Willie Malimba could not immediately comment on the matter as he was said to be in a meeting.

  1. The problem with primary and secondary school jobs are poorly paying jobs, hence, especially primary school, people become teachers not because they want to, but they have a poor MSCE and resort to going to teaching colleges where the government is the main employer. Government ends up employing teachers with no passion to teach and here we go they unionise and capture the government. They demand anything under the sun. Today Covid, tomorrow it will be an increment. End result is poor people’s children suffer. Govt schools are poor already and most people would rather take their kids to private schools. All kid of MPs and Ministers go to private schools. The problem is not Covid allowances, the major problems that needs to be rectified are poor salaries and poor schools.

    1. Not at all boss. I have seen teachers rising up the ladder ena mpaka joining law. By the have attained the highest level yourself???

    2. Just to enlighten you the late Bingu overhauled the whole education system ku secondary school. Minimum qualification is a diploma. Most have degrees and from there get a masters and phd akafuna. The current acting Executive director wa maneb did that. So osathamangila kunena kuti kulibe we trained and educated people.

  2. During campaign one man now in government top seat said teachers must not be used as campaign tool and that they must have a conducive working environment and said he would provide same, now qhats up with that promise to teachers

  3. My only advice to Government is that application of TIT FOR TAT strategies will just harm the innocent pupils. Let it be bold enough to appreciate the concerns and address them appropriately. Mtima woti ndine wamkulu will not solve matters!

    1. amen. they can go back mkusamakamphunzitsa…..why not…solve the problem osaopsyezana…osaiwala padzana timapita limodzi kumseu…

  4. Well done, don’t pay them a penny for refusing to work. Such unpatriotic people, no shame whatsoever to demand cash instead of PPEs? Absolutely pathetic and just tells you that our nation is lost, what can we expect these “teachers” to teach the kids?

    Fire the lot!!

    1. don’t hide behind ppe kulibe zimenezo in schools just go to nearest school and ask Osama osamangoti kukamwa mbeee

  5. tione how labour laws will be handled here. Komatu a good chunk voted for tonse alliance kudana ndi dpp akuti ma arrears nde tiyeni nazo

  6. Malawians must not forget that during the past MCP rule there were no such things as trade unions. It is therefore difficult for MCP be dancing to trade unions songs. Malimba should be careful otherwise he can be killed by MCP.

  7. I have never seen this before government must trade carefully otherwise they are real issues for teachers and they deserve better than this decision. Is this according to labor laws? Does that mean the government has run of ideas by failing to resolve teachers problems? Does the meeting was conducted in good manner? Remember these teachers were behind this change but very unfortunate that the government is not listening to them anymore. Remember this will have a huge cost in future. Where is our campaign promises? One day these teachers will sing a song and someone somewhere will dance the music and will be a benchmark.

    1. You’re cheating yourself here because these so called teachers first typexed the one they are now demanding allowances from. Second, they are not the only civil servants prone to catching the virus. Govt has put in place preventive measures such as social distancing and seclusion apart from wearing musks. Teachers are stupid and ignorant about the state of affairs about government financial position that it can not afford the purported expenditure of covid allowances from blue’s not only because it didn’t budget but that the economy size is small. Even the less headed Mwanamvekha knows this. Teachers are not so special over all other sectors of the civil service. This is a warning to government to recruit well educated, by form 4 standards, teachers in future who can better understand issues affecting the country and not just half baked idiots like these who never realized that they are being experimented upon. Teachers are, why did you help rigging for APM. STUPID!!!

      1. Why do you have to use too many words to show your foolishness. You could have just written ‘I am a Chakwera faithfool’,

    2. Where will the government get money??…umbuli winawu pena siwabwino. This tonse government is on serious business…osati zopusazo ayi

    3. Voting for them doesn’t meaning everyone must demand what he wants otherwise it’s not government, tonse government don’t be too soft muononga bingo knew this that’s why sometimes he even threat mp they will not get thier sarary

    1. Boma liyerekeze kupereka ndalama ku maohunzitsi awona kuti the rest of the Civil Servants apanga chiyani. We will all go on strike. Mphunzitsi ndi munthu omvetsa chisoni kwabasi. Kodi mmene ankati akufuna chalk allowance komanso hardship allowance ndi ndani wa boma aliyense amene anadandaulapo kuti bwanji mukuwapatsa maphunzitsi zonsezi? Kumene amati ku ma hard to reach areas kulibeko a Agriculture, Community Development, ndi ena? Bwanji sanalirire ma allowance? Kukana kuti boma lisawagulire ma PPE koma apatsidwe ndalama si china koma akufuna akagule ma velemuti. A chipatala amapanga deal ndi munthu oti wabwera odwala kale and they don’t know kuti munthuyo akudwala chani ndipo ndi pake kulandira risk allowance. Aphunzitsi mumudziwe Yesu.

  8. Useless teachers, they are talking of risk allowance and yet they walk and dance together without masks. Risk yaikulu ndi iwowo

  9. A complete violation of labour law. A labour dispute in which the employer fails to honour its part of a bargain can not be blamed on the employee. This kwantere government is the most useless government ever. Learn to respect teachers. Otherwise, this is just one statistic of the many failures of this court propped temporary government.

    1. The employer is not just supposed to bow down to any issue. Where is this world you have heard teachers receiving risk allowance because of covid? Can you serious. Here the issue to improve teachers conditions of service including salary. Not these once off payment you are stammering for.

      1. Have you hypocrites given PPE’s to teachers? Dont tout the 2 buckets, 10 pieces of soap and 100 masks here.

    2. Temporary government with a 5 year mandate to rule? The word temporary has been wrongly used. This is a legitimate government. Chikhwakhwalu chili ku Mangochi sichidzabwereranso m’boma or mutayebda mbulanda.

    3. You are entitled to your opinion but you are not smart. Gvt shud not give these people allowance. Who asked them to apply for these jobs.

    4. university of malawi once did this they ended up repaying back after court..so there is a precedent in our courts….plus compensation!
