Malawi’s opposition leader to finance house construction for underprivileged woman in Mzuzu
The right to adequate housing is a central component of women’s rights to equality under international human rights law, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Kondwani Nankhumwa has said.
Nankhumwa was in Mzuzu in the northern region at the weekend where, among several engagements, he visited an underprivileged woman, Joyce Nyausisya, at Msongwe who lives with a 15-year old boy with disability. The pair lives in a dilapidated grass-thatched hut that is completely insecure in the event of hostile weather and thuggery.
Visiting the pair on Sunday, August 8, 2021, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament said it is extremely worrying that most women and girls in Malawi live in insecure and unsafe homes, which exposes them to abuse and other forms of gender-based violence.
“Women play a pivotal role in our country’s political, social and economic development. As an ardent believer in the rights of women and girls, I shall ensure that I play my humble part in ensuring that as a country, we achieve genuine gender equality by advocating for policies and actions that promote the rights of women and children.
“As Leader of Opposition in Parliament, I will work with my colleagues to ensure that we remove any form of discrimination and abuse that our women and girls face at all level of our society and also ensure that we help raise themselves out of poverty through formulation and adoption of friendly legislation,” said Nankhumwa.
Nankhumwa, who is also Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for southern region, said after assessing the challenges that Joyce Nyausisya and the young boy face, he had decided to start financing construction of a better house for the pair this week and also buy a wheelchair for the boy.
Nyausisya was overwhelmed by the pledge and could not help but shed tears of joy at receiving the good news. She expressed gratitude to the Leader of the Opposition and prayed to God “to continue blessing him”.
A number of DPP national and regional leaders, including Members of Parliament (MPs) Julius Chione, Nkhata Bay North-east, and Yusuf Nthenda, Mulanje West.
Earlier in the morning, Nankhumwa attended a church service at St. Andrews CCAP of the Livingstonia Synod in Mzuzu. It was a special service where an induction ceremony for the new Church Minister, Isaiah Vwiyapo Mhone.
Addressing the congregation, the Leader of Opposition encouraged them to give the Man of God every support for him to succeed in spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. He advised the new Church Minister to treat all Christians at the church equally, without regard to either tribe or where they come from originally.
To me NANKHUMWA,Malawians from the North in diaspora gives you 99.9% for your love of MPOTO and MaLawi as a whole.Very few government leaders think of MPOTO for what they have contributed to the liberation of our country. The people of the North have also had contributed their love to Malawi nation.For. Instance,ZILILO MUMBA from Chidikalala in Mzimba, formed Nyasaland African Congress in 1919 when he was in South Africa.Orton Chin’goli Chirwa from Nkata Bay,formed the Malawi Congress Herein after,MCP when Mponongo Banda was resting in prison from where he shamelessly betrayed our Nyasaland/Malawi.to his Masters the British Imperialists. It is completely unfair therefore,to abandon MPOTO Politically and economically.ALUTA CONTINUA,VENCEREMOS.
Take note that Nyasaland African Congress was form in 1944 not in 1919. Preparations started in 1943. Ziliro was indeed the first president and he played a key role in its formation but he was not working alone. Charles Matinga, Fredrick Sangala, Mwase of Kasungu, Rev Chidongo Chinula, etc were active members of the struggle. A lot of people in Zomba and Blantyre, particularly African Civil Servants, took part in the meeting which had been called to explore the possibility of almagamating the various native associations in Nyasaland into one big block patterned after ANC in South Africa that had been formed in 1919. One eye witness is Lewis Bandawe, a Lommwe by tribe, author of the Memoirs of a Malawian. He attended the meeting which was also attended by representatives of various native associations from different parts of Nyasaland. In his book, Bandawe reports that he had himself, personally requested for the venue of the meeting from the then white resident Judge of the High Court that still stands today in Blantyre CBD where the robots are. Bandawe had worked at the court where he retired as Deputy Registrar after being there from 1900 to 1943. Some participants in that meeting came from the North, some from the Centre and the majority were from the South. When the party was finally constituted, donations were made to support the daily operations of the party. The greatest sponsor was a Mr. Tinkey, a coloured gentleman from Mulanje who became the biggest financier of ANC until he tragically died in the Vipya Tragedy of 1945 on Lake Malawi. After his death it was Dr. HK Banda who contributed biggest amounts than any other member to the ANC. He took over from Mr. Timkey. Dr. “Mphonongo” Banda (as you call him) had been a life member of ANC from the word go. When Dr. Banda came back to Nyasaland he continued to support NAC with his personal money. In fact, he set up his Chamwabvi Estate in Kasungu in 1948, 10 years before he came back Nyasaland, with a view to support the struggle for independence in Nyasaland apart from supporting his family back home. The formation of MCP should be traced to the Convention of 1958 when a resolution was collectively made that upon attainment of independence, “Nyasaland” would change to “Malawi” and Nyasaland African Congress would change its name to reflect the change in the name of the country. But lol! and behold! Operation Sunrise happened on 3rd March, 1959. Dr. Banda and hundreds of other NAC leaders got arrested and most were sent outside Malawi. NAC was legally banned under the law. However, Orton Chirwa, NAC’s legal counsel and the only NAC member outside prison decided to register another party under the law to sustain the interests of the Nyasas who were so agitated for change. Based on the 1958 convention resolution, he called the new party Malawi Congress Party. In principle, this was NOT a new party per se. This explains why when Dr. Banda was released from prison on fool’s day, April 1,1960, the MCP leadership automatically reverted to Dr. Banda without a vote. This was done on the understanding that MCP was just a legal replacement of the NAC. Was our independence won by Northerners / Zililo Mumba? Yes and No. Northerners had the benefit of education. They assumed most of the prominent positions in the native associations and the NAC. They were indeed important in leading the struggle. But, the truth is that all Malawians worked together as a family to achieve our independence. I, therefore, partly agree with Mr. Msowowa. But much of what he says lacks historical evidence. I like his zeal to write, however. Let’s keep writing about our collective Malawi.
Our Country needs a clear policy on how we can house our people. Otherwise, we will keep getting cheated by politicians who think can do these things individually.
You can keep forcing him on us through the corrupt courts and your wishful thinking but we don’t recognise him as Dpp opposition leader. Come 2023 we will have our leader
He is wasting his money those people if they don’t like you, the like and they can’t change their mind
It had to take Tonse team to push DPP out of power and control in order for Nankhumwa to see poverty among Malawians. Yet, it’s too little too late. While in power he never dared to talk of housing deficit as a human right. Now, he’s desperate to score political points. Try to emulate mai Joice Banda. Instead of building one, just build ten.
Good gesture Hon Nankhuwa, let’s emulate this good example desplyed here.
God bless you bwana.
Faka giya you’re doing the most undoable

A good gesture to you ( Nankhumwa), I hope if you were having such a heart for women during your time in government. We would not have been talking of the DPP sponsored rape of girls and women of Nsundwe. I hope this is not just to sugar coat yourself for the sake of improving your image but a sign that you are a better changed person.
Just do it. Mpaka kulengesa za nyumba imodzi! Kkkkkk DPP sindimaivetsa.
