Chakwera launches ‘open door’ charm offensive as MCP eyes 2030 comeback

Malawi Congress Party leader Lazarus Chakwera has embarked on an open-door initiative aimed at engaging with party members, political veterans and other key figures, in what the party describes as a deliberate strategy to reclaim power in 2030.

The MCP’s Publicity Secretary, Jessie Kabwira, confirmed the initiative in an interview on Friday, shortly after Chakwera held talks with political veteran Grezelder Jeffrey – a meeting that came just days after he met with MCP Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda.

According to Kabwira, the string of engagements being undertaken by the MCP president form part of a broader effort to strengthen the party’s internal affairs as it looks ahead to the 2030 general election.

Fixed days set aside for consultations
Chakwera has reportedly set aside Tuesdays and Thursdays each week specifically for the engagements, which are being held with grassroots party structures, senior officials and political veterans at the party’s headquarters in Lilongwe.

Expert calls initiative ‘timely’
Political analyst Dr Augustine Magolowondo has welcomed the development, describing the engagements as both key and timely for a party seeking to rebuild its fortunes.

However, he cautioned MCP leadership to ensure that all the views and inputs gathered through the process were genuinely taken into consideration, rather than treated as a symbolic exercise.
