Phoya says MPs exodus confusing, to stabilise
Leader of Government Business in Parliament Henry Phoya has described as “confusing” but “normal” defections of lawmakers in the wake of Section 65 but says the situation is likely to stabilise.
The last two weeks has seen at east eight MPs making a U- turn after dumping opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for governing People’s Party and recently announced their return to DPP while others have declared themselves independent.
Speaker Henry Chimunthu Banda is expected to make a ruling on the controversial section which regulates legislators on crossing the floor.
However, Phoya told Nyasa Times that the recent behaviour of MPs to move back and forth is “normal” because according to him, the situation is “fluid” at the moment with the abrupt change of government following sudden death of president Bingu WA Mutharika.
“It’s very confusing indeed but as PP we do understand what these MPs are going through. Today one MP is on side A and tomorrow he wants to be on side B and back to A, their frame of mind is unstable but we expect that soon the situation will normalise,” he said.
Phoya down played assertions that the development might weaken the ruling party saying PP is still intact – Section 65 implementation or not.
” PP remains strong in the midst of all this and as a party we are not affected in any way,” he said.
