I am UDF all the way, charges Jumbe
United Democratic Front (UDF) acting president Friday Jumbe has played down reports that he has dumped his party and joined the ruling People’s Party (PP).
Jumbe downplayed reports that he has been welcomed in PP alongside ex-envoy Ziliro Chibambo and former speaker of parliament and UDF national executive member Sam Mpasu.
“It is not true that we have defected to PP,” Jumbe told MIJ FM on Wednesday during good morning Malawi program.
PP sources claimed they had welcomed the trio into their party before the national convention on Monday.
But Jumbe said they not moving into the orange zone as they will stick with UDF.
“We have been in politics for a while and we have nothing to fear, if it was an issue of leaving UDF you could have heard straight away from us through a press conference” said Jumbe.
Jumbe said he is still discharging his duties as acting president for UDF a party which ruled Malawi from 1994 to 2004 under the leadership of Bakili Muluzi.
Jumbe described as “destructive and retrogressive politics” and regretted remarks from secretary general Kennedy Makwangwala describing members of his faction joining PP as “good riddance.”
He therefore advised Makwangwala to stop celebrating other people’s departure for the betterment of strengthening the party.
“We don’t celebrate when colleagues leave the party because politics is all about majority.” said the former finance minister.
“For example when honourable Cassim Chilumpha left UDF I said it was bad because they added value to our party,” he said.
Jumbe said that they will on Wednesday be addressing UDF southern region committee members to map the way forward for the party on different issues.
