Malawi Police intercept woman at KIA with drugs

A 27-year-old Malawian woman is in police custody on charges of importing dangerous drugs after airport police found her in possession of the illegal stuff.

The woman, a resident of Area 25 in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe, was arrested after disembarking from an Ethiopian Airliner at the Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) from India through Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The suspected drug trafficker who hails from Chitika village, TA Njombwa in Kasungu District, has been identified as Anne Mando.

A police spokesperson said the woman was caught in possession of 75 small packs of Ephedrine, one of the stimulating substances used to produce cocaine and other dangerous stimulating drugs.

Police believed the woman acquired the illicit drugs, whose estimated cost is yet to be established, from India with a suspected intent of selling or for personal use.

“Our officers intercepted her after landing from India through Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. She is currently being held at Lingadzi Police and has been charged with an offence of importing dangerous drugs contrary to Section 11 of the country’s Drug Acts” he said.

Ephedrine is a herbal plant commonly found in Central Asia and according to medical experts the substance has a potentially lethal stimulant effects on human’s central nervous system and heart.

Some of the serious adverse effects include hypertension (elevated blood pressure), palpitations (rapid heart rate), neurophathy (nerve damage), myopathy (muscle injury), psychosis, stroke, memory loss, heart rate irregularities, insomnia, nervousness, tremors, seizures, heart attacks, and death.
