Not yet clear winner in Mzimba bye- elections as voting continues
Voting in the ongoing two by elections in Mzimba Central and Mzimba South West constituencies in northern Malawi on Tuesday morning started on a low note due to low voter turn in the morning.
However the voter started streaming to the polling centers in the afternoon a development that impressed Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) officials
One of the MEC commissioners Archbishop Emeritus, Dr. Bernard Malango said was impressed with the peaceful atmospheres that characterized the voting exercise.
This was contrary to people expectation after the fracas that involved the People’s Party officials and the opposition Democratic Progressive Party last Saturday.
“The turnout is impressive as well as the environment its self. We have the hope that elections will free and fair,” he said.
There is no clear indication to who would carry the day although many people are giving the ruling People’s Party an upper hand in both constituencies.
Vice president Khumbo Kachali voted Tuesday in the Mzimba Southwest bye-election to help the ruling party win the seat which fell vacant following his appointment to the second highest office in the country.
The Mzimba Central Constituency fell vacant after the death of its parliament profesor Donton Mkandawire.
