Malawi new modelling agency opens in Blantyre
With the modelling industry in the country still struggling to make headway, a newly-established modelling agency will be launched this weekend in Blantyre.
Known as Cherie Amor, the firm promises to be the hope of the country’s models that for a long time have been exploited in many ways.
Founded last year by well-known models Tadala Itaye, Tina Kendricks and Tadala Mandala, the agency will be officially unveiled on Saturday night at Malawi Sun Hotel in the commercial city.
Speaking in an interview with Nyasa Times, Itaye said their aim is to help young upcoming-and-coming models realise their dreams and their value.
“Modelling is a very vulnerable career which sees many young girls exploited for money, and we strive to put an end to the exploitation of talented models by giving them a say in what they do and what they receive for it,” she said.
She added: “Models in the country are very underpaid, we intend to come up with generic prices that we feel models should adhere to as well as advise models on what is suitable for certain jobs, that way we eliminate being exploited.”
Itaye, who has modeled for top designers in the country, observed that there is a great future for modelling in the country if Malawians can recognise that it is a career.
“We just need to believe in ourselves as models and work hard to take our talents to a higher level. We have so much potential that could even take us international.
“I am confident that we can do well because I know that there is a lot of undiscovered talent here, it just takes the right attitude to get there,” she said further.
According to Itaye, once Cherie Amor is fully operational, the agency intends to start a models association in Malawi, which will help models that are outside of the Cherie Amor family to get unlimited access to advice on the issues that are affecting all models in the country.
During the Cherie Amor launch, the agency will showcase their models and give a platform to three upcoming-and-coming designers namely Debbie Gadama for Phade (pronounced Fade), Godfrey Kambewa for Kleronomos and Joyce Nyirongo for Irene Doug designs.
The ceremony, which will start at 6:30pm, will also act as a networking event for various company representatives to know about Cherie Amor and the services they offer.
Patrons to the event will also be treated to music by local hip-hop star Young Kay as well as dance displays by the Elements Dance Crew.
