Rains disrupt Tigresses-Escom match: Malawi OG Issa netball finals shifted to Wednesday
A thrilling final game between Escom Sisters and Bingu Tigresses in the OG Issa Southern Region Netball League was abandoned with 15 minutes in the first quarter as heavy rains disrupted the match on Saturday at Blantyre Youth Centre when the electricians were leading 14-7 baskets.
Southern Region Netball League general secretary Annie Hanjahanja said after consulting both teams because of soggy court. they agreed that the match be shifted to Wednesday, February 19, 2013 at the same venue.
“We have agreed that it will be just a continuation of today’s match meaning that the today’s baskets remains the same and they will just continue where they have left,” said Hanjahanja.
However, for the third position team and the rest of the teams they received their prizes with MTL Queens receiving K100, 000 for scooping third slot while Woget Sisters went away with K65, 000 for fourth slot.
In Saturday’s final first quarter, Escom Sisters proved tough as they kept Bingu Tigresses on the tight rope especially through their up-coming shooter Jessica ‘Agogo’ Mazengera, who was a marvel to watch when notching in baskets.
The combination of Mazengera alongside Bridget Kumwenda, Towera ‘Tobe’ Vinkhumbo, and Caroline ‘Ayuda’ Ngwira was a thorn to Tigresses who lacked composer in this quarter.
Some notable names for Tigresses, who showed determination to that winning anger, were their usual slippery shooter Sindi ‘Sniper’ Simutowe, Lauren ‘China’ Ngwira and Beatrice Kadango.
Escom Sisters coach Griffin ‘Zagalo’ Saenda told Nyasa Times: “We will make sure that come Wednesday we notch many baskets because our colleagues have a better goal aggregate.”
Tigresses coach Charles Mhango stressed that they will come flat out inoder to upset the table.
As it stands today, Escom Sisters are basking comfortably on the summit table with 63 points from 21 games tightly followed by Bingu Tigresses on the second slot with 60 points from 21 games as well.
However, any slip-up by the electricians on Wednesday will give Tigresses an upper advantage to grab the cup if they will tie on points basing on goal aggregate.
Bingu Tigresses have notched in 2273 baskets while Escom Sisters have managed to score 1896 baskets.
