38 local models qualify for Malawi Fashion Week boot camp
At least 38 local models have made it to Malawi fashion Week (MFW) 2013 boot camp which is scheduled to start next month in Lilongwe in preparation for the country’s inaugural Fashion Week.
These are the models that will be joined by their international counterparts shortlisted to showcase designers’ outfits during the inaugural MFW event slated for May 30 until June 3 at Umodzi Park, President’s Hotel Arena in the capital city.
The number comes to 38 after the organizers of the event, Elegant Resources by AriannaLouise and African Dzuwa, conducted auditions last month as well as last Saturday and a total of 77 Malawian and 2 Zambian models attended.
“All the local models that have been selected are expected to go into boot camp, which is called the Malawi Fashion Week College, where they will go through intensive training in modeling,” according to Dawa Loga-Lemberger, MFW CEO.
The second phase of the boot camp will be in May, and this will bring together both local and foreign models who will start jetting into Malawi on May 18.
There are 25 models from outside Malawi who have applied to be part of the MFW and they are as follows: Belgium (1), Botswana (11), Gabon (1), Ghana (1), Mozambique (1), South Africa (2), Tanzania (1), United Kingdom (1), Zambia (5) and Zimbabwe (1).
According to Loga-Lemberger, her organization is satisfied with the number and quality of models they have selected.
In the history of Malawi Fashion Industry, the nation will this year witness the birth of MFW, aimed at creating a platform for the devoted Malawi fashion designers.
The MFW’s goal is to embrace Malawi culture and be a trendsetter of local fashion labels and clothing brands by encouraging exports of local fabric and clothing all over the world through the annual event.
