Chakwera tells Karonga rally: MCP to transform Malawi
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president the Reverend Lazarus Chakwera on Sunday held a rally in the northern border district of Karonga where he introduced newly elected party vice president Richard Msowoya who comes from the district and pledged to bring development and change to the country under his rule.
Chakwera said every Malawian no matter which region or district wants development and the aim of his MCP is to “bring the people at the back to the front.”
He said MCP will advance a national agenda for development.
“We want to develop Malawi and transform this nation from all sectors and all parts of the country,” he said.
Chakwera said Malawi needs the leadership that will take the people to the land of their dreams.
This was a second rally in the northern region after his meeting on Saturday in Mzuzu and next stop is Southern region this week, a departure from the approach by former MCP president John Tembo who restricted himself to the party’s stronghold, the Central Region.
In his address on Saturday in Mzuzu, Chakwera said unless MCP returns to power Malawians will continue suffering from various social economic challenges.
He said Malawi is currently facing acute food shortage, commodity price hiking, maternal challenges, regionalism and frustrating transport and jobless challenges because the current leadership is not doing enough to transforming lives.
Chakwera condemned the fertilizer subsidy programme currently in use saying it is discriminatory as it targets the few leading to many leaning on the few to produce food for millions of Malawians.
He added that during the reign of Dr. Kamuzu Banda the infrastructures such as roads, schools, hospitals among others were of good quality because the party had the teeth to bite on corrupt practices and should it return to power, the similar philosophy will be put to practice for the social benefit of Malawians.
Chakwera noted that the transport system in Malawi is currently expensive because the status of our roads are bad and to check there is some returns out of their business, motorists fares are exorbitant a situation he said MCP will transform.
He, however, said for this to be achieved, there is need for Malawians to unite and vote for it come the 2014 tripartite elections.
On his part, MCP Regional Chairperson for the North Baza Kaunda appealed to people of the north to register in large numbers when registration rolls into action saying it is the only way they can make things change.—(Additional reporting by Sebastian Nyirenda, MEC Stringer)
