Mutharika to file nomination papers Feb 10
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has confirmed Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Peter Mutharika will file his nomination papers on February 10, 2013 at 9 am at COMESA Hall in Blantyre.
There has been speculative reports that 74-year-old Mutharika faces elegibility mist to contest as President in the May 20, 2014 elections because he is a holder of the American ‘Green Card’.
A Green card refers to an immigration process of becoming a permanent resident and serves as proof that its holder, a lawful permanent resident (LPR), has been officially granted immigration benefits, which include permission to reside and take employment in the United States.
DPP Secretary General Dr Jean Kalirani said Mutharika will file his nominations and is set to contest.
Kalirani said Mutharika apart from receiving presidential nominations papers and receiving confirmation dates for filing, he also received papers for his Thyolo East constituency.
“We are appealing to our supporters to make that event colourful because whether one like it or not Mutharika will enter State House on May 21, 2014,” Kalirani said.
MEC recent statistics from indicate that 16 party backed candidates have collected nomination forms while two collected as independent presidential candidates.
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Presidential torch bearer Dr Lazarus Chakwera will present his on February 11, 2014.
MCP Publicity Dr Jessie Kabwila confirmed saying MEC called them to confirm.
