MCP ready to give back Chakwera car to Malawi govt
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has hinted that it is ready to surrender the vehicle MG393AH which leader of the opposition Dr Lazarus Chakwera is currently using as part of his parliamentary entitlement.
Addressing a news conference at the MCP headquarters in Lilongwe on Thursday, five Members of Parliament of MCP led by Publicity Secretary, Dr Jessie Kabwira took turn in asking government to take Chakwera official vehicle if Executive see it as only remaining solution in solving myriad of problems locking the country.
“We are not clinging to the vehicle, after all as a party we are ready to give it to government so that the issue can be resolved once for all,” said Kabwira.
Taking his turn, Member of Parliament for Kasungu Central, Amon Nkhata, said that Government should also withdraw all vehicles from different heads of departments, Principal secretaries, Ministers, and from the office of Vice President.
“All of them were bought the same vehicles as their entitlement but it is surprising that only Chakwera is being fingered,” said Nkhata.
Kasungu East Parliamentarian Madaliso Kazombo, said when one is being employed he is given condition of services and entitlements.
He said Chakwera is entitled to the vehicle as his title is constitutional office.
Meanwhile, MCP has said it is geared for the next sitting of Parliament slated for Friday, Nov. 6, which starts with State of Nation Address from President Peter Mutharika.
Among other businesses during the sitting, the minister of finance is expected to deliver ministerial report on the state of economy in the country.

If only Govt could spend less on car acquisitions by buying the officers, executives etc cheaper cars – just so they are mobile and use the other funds to build bigger roads, increase the road network… how wonderful that could be. You see, we are using the road network our dear Kamuzu made when there were possibly 300 vehicles in Malawi. This DPP “guffment” is digging its dying pit. They are now confirming that someone is not in control of this republic. It is on a free floating gear and that is why the economy is going in turbulence. Such type of expenditures were dully approved by the Executive. Parliament only made the request for vehicles and submitted for approval at the OPC and subsequently consented by the ODPP. The authorizing official was at liberty of either rejecting, approving or giving a different choice of vehicles. But in this case, they approved for this type of vehicles. These people are just accusing their superior for failing to exercise the authorizing power. Chakwera and Msowoya are not at OPC to authorize their vehicles. Then, how many of such poorly decided purchases or activities are going through? Let alone UNGA extravaganza. Kamnyamata kaja kamanena zoona ndithu.

I do not know if people deliberately misunderstand issues or not. From what i can get from MCP resolution on returning the cars – they feel that they will lead the way – if DPP govt strongly feel that the vehicles bought for officials based on their entitlements are contributing to the economic woes of the country, – and if officials including (Chakwera and Msowoya) should be called upon to make reparations and a contribute towards fighting the economic war or poverty ( being championed by issues like UNGA delegation) then yes the officials should return the vehicles – not only Chakwera and Msowoya – but all the official including Peter Munthalika himself.
This message is very clear. i wonder why people are foaming in their foul mouths castigating Chakwera and Msowoya. I feel the Govt should welcome the wise leadership and ask all officials – including Maxton Mbendera and his thieving CEO to return the vehicles and sell them and realize money to fight economic woes created by DPP.

Let me begin by reminding g people that these are people who have conditions of service which dictate what they are entitled to. Returning the vehicle is a daft decision and a cheap political act. As one commentator has said, the writing is already on the wall.

Please return the car without any condition. If Chakwera is morally right, he should not even ask for other people to bring back their cars. Let him just return the car. The point is that it was wrong for the entire Government to budget such lavish spending (whether it is vehicles or trips or large convoys or so many State Houses) when a country lost money through Cash gate, taxes and fees are going up, the so-called “donors” have closed their fists, till the country sorts out its financial mess and puts in place a system of financial management that cannot be corrupted.
The priorities for expenditure have to be re-visited. Fulfil the entitlements of Malawians (your employer) first before you fulfill your entitlements. The entitlements of Malawians include adequate medical facilities and availability of medicines in hospitals and clinics, good education, food, water, electricity, employment, a judiciary that is functional, security of life and property. These are the basics that must be prioritized. By lavishly spending on vehicles and other trappings of power our leaders project an image of country that cannot responsibly manage its financial affairs. We do not impress anybody!!!
There is need for sober thinking about the scale and cost of these entitlements especisly in hard times when everybody is expected to tighten the belt.

The MCP leadership were not heard or seen attempting to have parliament buy cheaper cars in view of the state of the economy. They are appearing to be happy to partake of the extravagance. MCP miscalcuted and have made a political blunder of enormous proportion. Surely they have political advisors, who on moral ground should have adviced on accepting the vehicle in the first instance given the state of the government coffers. One thing i have learnt in Malawi people comment as if they don’t have heads. What varies the car issue is people are entitled to different things based on various positions. A presidential convoy is also an entitlement when it is worn out it is supposed to be replaced. What is wrong with Chakwera and other parliament staff who have received their entitlements? In Malawi others are entitled to chalk as a working tool so that students pass, do you tell me this should be taken away as well? Others you are entitled to a bicycle for you to wok effectively, do you need it to be taken away? People we will see when your turn comes. After all these are public resources used and the entitlements as the same as cabinet ministers, do you tell me that their entitlements need to be taken way because the economy is in bad shape?
