Activist blast Bingu for snatching only kidney specialist
Head of Malawi Health Equity Network (Mehn) Martha Kwataine has blasted President Bingu wa Mutharika for snatching the only specialist kidney doctor from Kamuzu Central Hospital to be at State House and live thousands of kidney patients, mostly poor people, in the cold.
Media reports say Dr Dan Namarika of Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) has been hired at State House as General Physician.
Kwataine described the development as “selfishness of the highest order” on the part of Mutharika.
“This is selfishness of the highest order,” Kwataine told Zodiak radio.
“ Does the Doctor at State House attend to the people there on daily basis? Why not still have the Doctor at the hospital and he be going to State House when need be,” she said.
“I feel they should rework the arrangement because patients at the hospital should not suffer at the expense of a few,” added Kwataine.
KCH Director Dr. Noor Alide played down fears, saying Namarika “is still invited to attend to special cases.”
Ministry of Health has raised hopes saying some doctors are currently undergoing training outside the country as one way of beefing up kidney failure Doctors in Malawi, according to the radio.
