Malawi national chess squads have received a major boost from mobile network giant Airtel Malawi and hospitality firm Crossroads Hotel ahead of the Zone 4.5 Online Team Championship with a provision of free internet bundles and spacious playing venues.

The three-day international online chess tournament, which has attracted countries from Zone 4.5 comprising SADC countries is expected to run from this evening to Sunday afternoon. Malawi is participating in all the categories of Open, Ladies, Under 20 boys and Under 20 girls.

The Malawi teams have received a perfect Mother’s Day gift from Airtel Malawi and Crossroads Hotel, who have provided internet bundles and spacious playing venues, respectively.

Airtel has provided 15 gigabytes (GBs) of internet bundles to each of the players while Crossroads Hotel has offered free spacious playing venues for the teams in Lilongwe and Blantyre.

In a statement, Airtel Malawi marketing director Frank Magombo said the assistance is in line with the company’s objective of ‘connecting’ Malawians through the company’s 4G powered internet that also has the widest coverage in the country.

“We are proud to support the Malawi chess teams’ participation at this year’s Zone 4.5 online championship. As we continue to live in the unprecedented era of social distancing and virtual interactions, we hope the participation by team Malawi will defy the odds and earn the country a good position in the zonal rankings,” said Magombo.

Chessam president Susan Namangale was all thanks to Airtel Malawi and Crossroads for the gestures: “With the tough economic hardships perpetrated by the Corona Virus pandemic, we cannot always be knocking on government’s door. We need a helping hand from partners like Airtel and Crossroads Hotel,” said Namangale.
