Analyst cautions Chakwera against reference to ‘Hi-5’ mantra: ‘This is Tonse govt not MCP’

Political analyst Vincent Kondowe has cautioned President Lazarus Chakwera against continued reference to his ‘Super Hi 5’ political mantra as the driving force of his administration, reminding him he is leading a Tonse Alliance government of nine parties that won June 23 presidential elections.

President Chakwera flanked by Vice-president Saulos  Chilima : Together they won the elections under Tonse Alliance banner

Kondowe said the touting of ‘Chakwera Super Hi-5’ could fuel scepticism and mistrust within the Tonse alliance government.

In his interviews with international media, Chakwera has been pointing out that his administration transformation agenda is powered by his ‘Super Hi 5’.

This has also been echoed by State House director of communication Pastor Sean Kampondeni and MCP officials.

And Kondowe observed that in his first State of the Nation Address (Sona) delivered in Parliament on Friday,  the President consistently referred to the Super Hi-Five as the driver for development, when the Tonse Alliance has a common manifesto on which agenda Chakwera was elected.

In his Hi-5, Chakwera is committing prospering together, ending corruption, upholding the rule of law, servant leadership and uniting Malawi.

Leader of Opposition, Kondwani Nankhumwa has also said that Malawians are left to wonder whether this is a Tonse Alliance government or just an MCP government.

He reminded Chakwera that he won because of Tonse Alliance banner as Malawians businesses were lured to enjoy a duty-free week; free electricity and water connection; youths want to be among the one million people to be employed in the first 12 months of this government.

The opposition leader said Chakwera in Sona chose to “hide behind less definable Hi-5 agenda, such as prospering together and subtly throwing the responsibility of ending poverty in this country back to Malawians.”

He said: “We are, therefore, left to wonder whether this is a Tonse Alliance government or just an MCP government. You can see, therefore, that there is no time for Mr. President to put two feet on the table, two hands at the back of his head and to just roll with the season because the honeymoon is already over.”

Nankhumwa also observed that  Malawi has not yet reached a point of equal opportunities, Malawi is of a selected a few, saying even some Tonse members have already started raising the red flag that Tonse is slowly degenerating into “Ndekha Alliance.”

This is mcp government, pure and simple. Who was on the ballot? Those who use Tonse are people who can’t stomach that this is mcp government. Shame on them who declared that mcp shall never rule Malawi again. Well it is ruling. It was only through these dpp vote thieves that they kept mcp at bay, temporarily. Nine parties, really? Only utm comes close to a meaningful party, only just.

People are very busy finding faults where there are non. If you would ask the so called analysts which one of the Hi 5 slogans is not good for the country,he will not tell you. Time for campaign fellow Malawians is over. Let us build this country rather than trying to find a needle in a hay stack.

I hope the so called political analyst remembers what happened when a Tonse Symbol was presented to MEC. Currently, there is nothing like a Tonse Government, at least legally. When you rally behind someone or some institution you do not expect the one behind whom you rally to throw out his/her symbol. And what is the political analyst going to advise on candidates for the forthcoming by-elections? In Law, there is an MCP Government and NOT a Tonse Government. I think the alliance could have agreed to register an entity called Tonse before campaigning, and when voting we could have… Read more »

It was there during campaign. Even Chilima touted the Chakwera hi5. The tonse merged manifesto is being implemented within the Chakwera hi5 framework. Pali vuto?

Guys, don’t respect everybody with the title of POLITICAL ANALYST, please. Anyone who makes a comment on what the president has said or done is called a political analyst these days- however dull and stupid the comment is. This guy called Vincent Khondowe – just who the hell is this guy? Does he even know that the alliance came to be because other parties agreed with the HI-5? Why not shutting up and wait to see how the government will deliver its HI-5 based development?

The Tonse philosophy is inspired by the hi5 principles as propounded by Chakwera. Is there anybody with a problem with any of the hi5 principles?or the analyst just doesn’t like it because they are by Chakwera? Amangwetu mwatani kodi

The president is very confused and eventually consing the Nation. We voted for Tonse Alliance and please don’t take Malawians for granted as if they did not know what they were voting for. Its not Hi-5 that put you on that seat, don’t tell us that now, where was it during the campaign? you are now becoming clever to bring your personal agendas? This kind of behavior is bringing divisions in the Tonse alliance and its pity that early as this we have already trust in you. We are worried that where are you taking us to. Some of us voted… Read more »

Guys it was difficult to use H-5 as a campaign tool because its abstract. there was no specific outcome with clear time frame and substantive evidence. Accept their confusion; hence SONA was full of ideas rather than plans with specific outcome and time frame. chofunika apa abale a Congress should be honest and stop to be arrogant because it will not help tomorrow.
