Anglican Church to hold prayers for Malawi watershed elections

Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi is scheduled to hold Mary’s day commemoration this weekend at All Saints-Parish -Thyolo with prayers to end the killing of persons with albinism and tripartite elections.

In an interview, Guilds Coordinator, Priscilla Mphande said annually, women in the church celebrate the role which Mary, the mother of Jesus played and that She was chosen for the most important job in history of bringing our Saviour Jesus into the world.

She said: ‘Mary knew Old Testament prophecy about the coming Messiah. For this reason, Mary is a very important woman as far as we speak about world’s salvation. This year, will take it as opportunity to pray for the coming tripartite elections, floods, road accidents among others. Floods have displaced many people.  Rains also washed away crops and livestock.

“Our Bishop has also appealed for relief items to show love to the victims. As a nation, we need to humble ourselves to praying for mercies, grace and protection. We need divine intervention so to have peaceful elections, clean campaign and choose a wise-God fearing leader.

 

“We will begin on Friday evening with prayers. Some of the activities marking the day are organised plays and choir festival where we shall choose which choirs to perform on the main event which is on Saturday,”she said.

According to Mphande, they are expecting over 5.000 women and girls from various Guilds from the church such as Mothers Union-MU, St. Veronica, Daughters and St. Agnes among others saying that those that who do not belong to any guild and non-Anglicans, are all also welcome.

In a statement from the church in part says, ‘In Mary, we learn that God gives more grace as the burdens grow greater in order to fulfil God’s plan on earth.  Mary is viewed as the most privileged woman who ever lived on earth though we may not realize the price she paid for the honour.

According to Church’s Diocesan Events’ program, the three day commemoration which will be graced by the church’s Bishop Alinafe Kalemba under theme, ‘Listening to God in Every Circumstance’

The event is important for the church were celebrating virgin Mary mother of our Lord Jesus Christ nine months to Christmas -the birth of Jesus Christ and gives mothers opportunity to interact with their fellow mothers from other archdeaconries to compare notes and share experiences.

The church will also distribute relief items to some families affected by the floods.

This day is celebrated on the 25th March each year but falls on the nearest Saturday to the date.
