According to Dedza Police Deputy Publicist Constable Cassim Manda, Mwitha was arrested on Monday afternoon after they got a tip from official who works with one of the leading seeds producers Monsanto Limited who was on inspection tour in the district.

Last month Police in the same district arrested another woman Catherine Kachipande who was found packing fake maize seeds at her compound.

The arrests come in the wake of Seed Trade Association of Malawi (Stam) secretary general Nessim Nyama has warned farmers to be on high alert when buying maize seed as fake versions have flooded the market.

Stam encourages farmers to buy from agro-dealers.

There has been spate of arrests of unscrupulous traders packing and selling fake maize seed in several parts of the country.

According to National Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa, three cases have so far been reported in Mwanza, Dedza and Limbe in Blantyre.

The fake seed syndicate is deceiving as it packs the product in genuine packaging but with fake seed

Mwitha hails from Chisankhwa village in the area of traditional authority Maulambia in Chitipa district.

  1. You can’t tell it’s a fake seed until it germinates. Even those from Mosanto can fail to sprout. A seed is a seed. Ife kwathu timadzala ya lokolo and imamera. Palibe nkhani apa. Munamva kuti mbewuyo sikamera?

  2. These assholes must be extremely punished.I also bought fake seeds in area 23 tank from a certain seed/farmers shop close to chigayo and i yielded nothing.I lost alot of money.F**+k them!

  3. Where are they getting the packaging? Are printers cheating the authentic orders by over printing orders and selling genuine packaging to the fraudsters?

  4. Thanks for a job well done of arresting this educated savage who deserve immediate dismissal from her work. Dz has hard working farmers and their literacy level is very low according to that research and selling them fake seeds is criminal to them and Malawi as a whole. Pliz deal with this thief as already done with Kachipande. azimayi mwatani kubaku?

  5. Please Mr journalist. There’s no place in chitipa called Maulambia. Just put some a little effort and you will get the names right.

  8. Monsanto is a thief. A thief reports a fellow thief. Police arrest just one of the two thieves! Monopolizing the seed market is as bad as selling fake seed. Someone at Capitol Hill do something about this! Monsanto is killing Agriculture world-over in the quest for obscene profits.

  9. Mwati Lucy chakutichakuti Mwitha? Kodi a Mwitha ake ndi aja adali achiomba? Ngati ali omwewo ndiye nzosabwitsa kuti mwana wawo akuchita izi. Ndi zammagazi izi!

  10. When the country straggles with its economy, cases like these become too many such that law enforcement institutions loose some of the battles.
People would even wish to cause a total economic breakdown like it was in 2011 to part 2012 to take an advantage of such failure.
Wonder why Asian countries mainly China are economically advanced? They have tough laws on many critical issues as just some of the ones below:
    Corruption = death sentence
Theft of government funds = death sentence.
More than 1 child now repealed to 2 children= the extra one is executed
They have many tough laws that make their citizens loyal.

  11. Number six and number two this is not a tumbuka case!! Why is it that when a tumbuka does something wrong you talk as if all tumbuka are that way, and when a tumbuka does things of national benefit you never think all tumbukas are good. You need to revise your logical skills are questionable.

  12. ……….and the government is busy milking thinny cows…….palibe wabwino apa. SHUPITI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Malawi is rotten!!!! She works for a reputable company and she abuses people,s trust? Where should a poor Malawian run to?
