Archbishop Msusa urges Catholic women  to be agents of evangelisation

Catholic Women in the Archdiocese of Blantyre have been urged to be effective agents of evangelisation in homes and workplaces.

His Grace Msusa: Be agents ofevangelisation

Archbishop of Blantyre, Thomas Luke Msusa said this at the end of a Leadership training workshop organised for women by the Pastoral Department of the Archdiocese. The workshop was held at Nantipwili Pastoral Centre from 17th to 19th March 2017.

“Am happy with the work you our mothers are doing in the Archdiocese. To be more effective you need knowledge of the Church and proper leadership skills. From this training workshop I encourage you to go out to all the forty one Parishes and be active agents of evangelisation” said his Grace Thomas Luke Msusa.

Msusa further applauded the women for being proactive in the care for the environment in line with Pope Francis’s Laudato Si. This he said refering to a tree planting project which the Catholic Women Organisation launched in February in partnership with National Bank of Malawi. According to this project 21,000 trees have been planted this year alone.

Pastoral Secretary of the Archdiocese of Blantyre, Fr. Alfred Chaima thanked the women for attending the workshop which was organised to empower them. He said his office is organising such training workshops for various groups in the Archdiocese as part of on-going formation.

“Catholic women do a lot of work in the Church. We learn the faith from them. They are good-willed, but good will alone is not enough. They need skills and knowledge to do their work. So we have trained them in basic leadership skills, Church doctrine, Self-relience and how to care for their families,” explained Fr Chaima.

Participants to the workshop were drawn from all the Parishes of the Archdiocese. One of the participants Mrs Kanjoka Chairlady of Nthawira Parish expressed satisfaction with the way the training was organised.

“We are primary teachers of faith. As such we need to understand our faith before attempting to impart it to our children. As leaders we also require skills. The workshop achieved all these.”

Facilitators of the three day Workshop were the Pastoral Secretary Fr Alfred Chaima, his deputy Fr Peter Kamtembe, Fr Tambala (PMS Director & Investments Manager) and Fr Paul Nkolombidzo (Financial Adminstrator and Sr. Melia Msona secretary in the Pastoral Department.

Archbishop Msusa also asked the women to take care of the youth, imploring them in special way to pray for the coming Synod of the Youth.

Catholic Women Organisation is one of the most important groups in the Catholic Church. They are found in all Church occasions.

I thought the Catholic church does not want us, as women, to stand on the pulpit and preach – what type of evangelism is Archbishop Msusa talking about? Let him continue to propagating the perils of patriarchy on which the church survives on – of priests and ‘men’ having a greater role than women. As a Catholic, I am not interested in evangelising because of the church’s attitude toward women.
