Atupele says Malawi land governance to be transformed
Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Atupele Muluzi says he is very committed to bring transparency and accountability reforms in his ministry.
This follows government’s agenda to diversify the country’s economy through Civil Service Reforms.
The Lands minister said this on Tuesday during his familiarization tour to lands offices in Blantyre.
Muluzi said his Ministry is implementing a lot of policies which will enable pure service delivery in the Ministry plus ensuring that all Malawians have access to land.
He explained: “As you are aware, government is implementing a number of policies to ensure that it diversifies its economy through ensuring that the growth comes from the private sector.
“The private sector is crucial in providing much needed growth to the country and also the Ministry of Lands is significant in realizing this growth because it provides land for growth. As such, reforms will go a long way towards improving the land delivery.”
Muluzi emphasized that he want to achieve transparency and accountability in the Ministry of Lands by making sure that the ministry’s focus is shifted to providing tangible delivery and being result oriented for the betterment of Malawians.
“As of now my ministry is doing a lot of reforms some of them being, Policy legal reforms which includes a lot of bills meant to improve land governance in the country, provide access to land to all people including vulnerable groups like women and children, and ensuring that we have land that is properly administered.
“In addition, there will also be administrative reforms for like the computerization and digitalization of the land registry which is in process and this has included the implementation of rural housing and the urban poor,” said Muluzi.
Commenting on capacity building among the officers, the Lands Minister said he is committed to enhance capacity building to ensure that officers are imparted with skills on how they can manage the reforms.
“This Ministry is a highland of excellence so apart from the policies put forward to transform this ministry, I am requesting all of you to work hard at work despite little resources, be punctual at work,” he said.
In her remarks, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Ivy Luhanga called upon the officers in this ministry to work together in order to achieve a common goal of bringing the reforms.
