Balaka man arrested at his engagement ceremony

There was drama at Chilobwe location in Balaka district eastern Malawi after a bridegroom was arrested at his engagement ceremony.

Balaka police spokesperson sub-Inspector Joseph Sauka says the bridegroom Mavuto Michael aged 27 was arrested on allegation that he stole a pig sometime back and he had been in hiding until yesterday when he was spotted at his engagement ceremony by the complainant.

“The complainant Mrs Douglas was tipped by well-wishers that the suspect who stole her pig was having an engagement ceremony and after confirming that he was indeed the same person, she rushed to report the matter to Police who rushed to the scene and found the bridegroom at the middle of celebrations which ended abruptly after his arrest,” says Sauka.

Meanwhile the suspect is still in Police custody and is expected to appear before court soon where he will answer a case of theft contrary to section 278 of the penal code.

Mavuto Michael comes from Njalanja village, Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka district.

And in a related development, a 20-year old bride has been convicted by the Balaka Second Grade Magistrate Court after being found guilty for undressing her bridal girl.

The court held that the suspect Ethel Nomanda Kachingwe on paraded naked a 16 year old girl who was one of bridal party at her engagement ceremony after she failed to pay K3, 550.00 for the dress she wore.

The suspect pleaded guilty to the offence of insulting the modesty of a woman which is contrary to section 137(3) of the penal code.

Passing judgment, Second Grade Magistrate Victor Sibu said that what the suspect did is a disgrace to all the women and sentenced her to 6 months imprisonment with hard labour and later suspended it to 12 months.

  4. My judgement is that the police acted Inhumanely umunthuless unprofessionally carelessly thoughtlessly and senselessly they would have waited up yo the end and arredt this suspect it takes so much cash to arrange for chinhkhoswe ndiye ngati sanabe mumubwezeratu zake. He is just a susprct and didnt deserve to be treated this manner stupid balaka police snd complainant who should be sued after this man is acqiited

  5. Sometimes we need to think wise before acting, as a tained office failing to apply logical ideas just to wait until the ceremony ends, if the court will prove him innoncent, r u able to compesate? Lets put proffessional knowledge in front of our duty not zimenezi, zandikhudza

  6. inaso imakhala ngati sanje nanga akapezeka osalakwa mubweze zomwe anakozetsera mwambo umenewu

  7. Yes I agree with Retired Judge, Police officers did not use common sense, he is a suspect not a convicted person, they were supposed to send the plain clothes officers or Detectives to go there up until everything is finished then take him for questioning. Cos in a case like this one you only take someone for questioning, he is not guilty until proven by the court of law. If it were that he killed somebody or raped someone well this could be fair but not in this case, it was indeed wrong for the police to act in the manner they did.

  8. Police needs to be sensible at times. Serious crimes you dont rush koma petty issues. Agalu inu.

  9. You still a pig the police will arrest you quickly. If you have DPP connections and charged with murder, Judge Kamanga will take the case and you LL walk away free, that’s the end of it. Malawi.

  12. A police… inunso mudzikhala ndi umunthu.. osamudikira amalize kaye bwanji? he is only a suspect..nanga akakapezeka osalakakwa?

  13. Mwaona? Most of the comments are sympathetic because the boy is from the South. Imagine if the this thief was from the North, many insults would have been poured. Too tribalistic Malawians.

  14. Police, please be reformed, the law says, one is innocent until proven guilty, what if the court proves him innocent? Did you thought about this when you were arresting the man? Please musamatichititse manyazi ngati dziko la anthu osazindikira chonde. The no matter what the man remains a suspect.

  15. Apolisi nanu! Tamatolani mbava zikuluzikulu za cashgate! Mukuziopa kodi chifukwa zili mumipando?

  16. Well done police! In some of these cases, akamati suspect umakhala ulemu chabe koma munthu atalakwadi. In this case am sure police had enough grounds of arresting this embarrassing thug. Some people just need such rude awakenings to realise that whatever they are doing is wrong. This man needs to be reformed first before becoming a husband or father. Otherwise he would be an embarassment to the family.

  17. This is not right and acceptable. Marriage is sacred, the police could have hanged around and arrested him at the dot of the occasion. Remember he iz only a suspect and not convict.

  18. Well done police. This man needs to be reformed first before becoming a husband or father. Otherwise he would be an embarassment to the family.

  19. How about those who took 577 billion ? , We know them and they walk free , one pig we want the ACB to act kkkkkkkk! waste of time .

  20. Tiamvetse apolisi athuwa.Paja majority ndi yoti mmutu mmoperewera zedi. No common sense. Look at the good magistrate, new wife wovula mtsikana ampatsa suspended sentence new wifeyu so that katundu agwire ntchito koma apolisi kukasokoneza mwambo wofunika ngati uwo bcoz of a pig? mzimayiyo mwinanso ndi nsanje kuti mzake walanda katundu woti naye amaseweretsako, nkutheka ,

  21. pig is harraam (forbidden) thts why bad things happen to those who eat, sell or keep pork..above is one example

  22. Sometimes the conduct of the police really baffles me. Common sense would dictate that the person should have been arrested after the ceremony. And to imagine that he is the cooler and yet murderers like Ali Kaka are enjoying bail really smacks of a rotten justice system

  23. Thats work for CIDs, they could have waited until program over .its quiet embarrassing as this guy had spent and had relatives in the midst

  24. And you call this a reformed Police? Hell no! . What if the court proves the guy not guilty? Are you going to pay him for damages? Whose money ? Our money? . You could have waited unto the ceremony was over to avoid unnecessary tension and drama.

  25. u police pipo u could hav wait a bit let him finish the ceremony then arrest,u who undressed felo girl shame on u,3550kwacha only see now, learn to forgive

  26. Wat if the court proved him inocent? Wat will happen, the best idea was to send the CID to wait until the ceremony is over and take him. It may be proven technically that he is not the one so it may be a big problem.
