Ben Phiri: EU vehicle donation a ‘symbol of partnership’ for civic education
Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Dr Ben Malunga Phiri presided over the handover of a minibus and a Toyota Hilux donated by the European Union to the Ministry and the National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) under the Boma Lathu Programme.

The vehicles were officially handed over by the Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union to Malawi, His Excellency Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi.
Speaking during the ceremony, Dr Phiri thanked the EU for its continued support to Malawi in strengthening democratic governance, civic participation and accountability.
“This vehicle is not merely a means of transport; it is a symbol of partnership, cooperation and our shared commitment to strengthening civic education in Malawi,” he said. “It will help our officers reach communities, civic education hubs and traditional authorities to ensure activities reach the intended beneficiaries.”
In his remarks, Ambassador Gaztelumendi commended the strong working relationship between the European Union and the Government of Malawi, noting that the partnership continues to deepen. He expressed hope that the support would go a long way in enhancing service delivery and strengthening civic engagement at community level.
The vehicles are expected to ease transport challenges for the two institutions and strengthen implementation of Boma Lathu activities, in line with the goals of Malawi 2063.
