Ben Phiri marks birthday with tributes from ministry and political allies
Malawi’s Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dr Ben Malunga Phiri, was the subject of warm tributes from across government on Monday as colleagues marked his birthday.

The Ministry issued a formal statement honouring Phiri’s “dedicated and purposeful national service,” while a more personal message came from Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Chimwemwe Chipungu, who described Phiri as his “partner in crime” and “mentor in politics.”
In his tribute, Chipungu reflected on years of shared political work across the country, recalling journeys together to Zambia and stopovers in towns including Zalewa and Mzuzu — memories, he suggested, that reflected a close working relationship built over successive campaigns and years in office.
The tribute, while informal in tone, underscored the personal bonds that often underpin political partnerships in Malawi, with Chipungu closing his message by wishing Phiri continued health and blessings in the year ahead.
The birthday greetings add to a broader picture of camaraderie among senior figures in Malawi’s Cabinet, illustrating how personal relationships continue to shape and sustain political life beyond the more formal business of government.
