Speaking to Nyasa Times ahead of the launch, Public Relations Manager for Blantyre City Council (BCC) Anthony Katsunda, the decision to pick Kamwendo was made a long time ago.

“We had to pick someone who would be inspirational to the kids. He (Kamwendo)  has achieved a lot in football having played at the top level for a long period. We hope he can motivate them.

“The Mayors trophy is here to stay. Apart from Kamwendo, the launch will also be graced by Minister of Local government and rural development Kondwani Nankhumwa. We have a number of suprises on the day and people should just be on the lookout,” said Katsunda.

Kamwendo told Nyasa Times that he is delighted to be recognised by BCC.

“I am really honored to be given such  recognition . The Mayors trophy is a such an important event and I will use this opportunity to motivate the next stars of the game. I started from a scratch like anyone else and hope the kids will be inspired,” said Kamwendo who scored a brace during his team’s win over Karonga United on Saturday.
