Blue Eagles crowned Malawi Carlsberg Cup champions

A 9th minute goal from Blue Eagles influential winger Ben Hojani was enough to hand the Eagles a deserved K7 Million in the cup final of the 2012 Carlsberg Cup final played at Civo stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday.

Both teams started the game on a high note but it was Blue Eagles who started to get a lions share midway in the first half.

Escom United looked a disorganised side in almost all departments.

Veteran striker Chiukepo Msowoya registered his presence as he was able to keep the ball but was let down by his partner upfront Manase Chiyesa whose form was not impressive but regained form in the second half.

First half ended 1-0 in favour of Blue Eagles.

2nd half
Escom United looked a rejuvinated side and the introduction of Kelvin Hanganda for Noel Mkandawire brought rhythm to the side.

Lawrence Milanzi was also brought in for Yamikani Kachali while Eagles introduced Peter Mgangira to tighten the midfield.

Escom United continued to dominate the second half creating a number of scoring opportunities.

Chiukepo missed a golden opportunity when his shot off target in the 16 yard box after his first attempt had hit the upright.

Bernard Harawa, Spencer Mhone were also a marvel to watch.

Blue Eagles defence marshaled by Pempho Kamsichiri managed to contain the pressure until the final.

Interviews
Blue Eagles coach Deckleck Msakakuona was in cloud nine for the win.

“I am so happy and I thank God for the win. We played better though we had some shortfall but the good thing is that we have won the cup,” he said.

One of Escom coaches Kondwani Gawani said his team lost composure in the first half but thank his charges for coming back into the game in the second.

“We lost concentration but we managed to come back into the game. We wish we could have won the cup but this is how it has ended, we are happy to end on second position” said Gawani.
