Blue Eagles secure K250m sponsorship from Standard Bank Malawi
Standard Bank Malawi has thrown a lifeline to league leaders Blue Eagles FC, unveiling a blockbuster K250 million sponsorship deal in a glittering ceremony at the Malawi Police Service Headquarters in Lilongwe.

The timing could hardly have been sweeter for the Eagles, who were handed the eye-watering cheque just as they sit proudly at the summit of the top-flight FDH Bank Premiership.
Standard Bank chief executive Philip Madinga, himself a former talented footballer, swept his eyes across the packed room before dropping the bombshell announcement to rapturous applause.
“That is why today we are proud to commit a one-year long sponsorship of K250 million to the Eagles Football Club,” Madinga declared.
“This investment will make Standard Bank the name sponsor of the team that has demonstrated remarkable performance in Malawi’s football landscape.”
Madinga revealed the hefty investment will cover the club’s key priorities, including playing and selected team apparel, as well as administrative support, explaining the bank’s broader mission behind the gesture.
“At Standard Bank, our purpose is clear: Malawi is our home, we drive her growth,” he said.
“We believe that supporting sport is one of the most effective ways of contributing to that growth because sport creates opportunity, develops talent, strengthens communities and inspires the next generation of leaders.”
In a startling admission that will raise eyebrows among football fans, Malawi Police Service Inspector General Richard Luhanga confirmed the club has been struggling financially behind the scenes, despite its position at the top of the table.
“The milestone today is another victory that we can get sponsorship despite being a government team,” Luhanga said.
“Our mission statement is working together with all stakeholders. We are grateful for this sponsorship. We are struggling to run the team. This sponsorship will help us run our team.”
The police chief also used the occasion to thank Standard Bank for the timely gesture, insisting the donation had arrived at exactly the right moment for the club.
Malawi National Council of Sports board chairperson Jim Kalua echoed those sentiments, hailing the deal as proof that government backing alone is not enough to keep Malawian football competitive.
“This is an important partnership, and as Sports Council, we commend Standard Bank,” Kalua said.
“This is more than a financial support. It is an important investment in the growth of Eagles Football Club.”
He went further, issuing a pointed message to Blue Eagles about the responsibility that comes with the windfall.
“Government alone cannot develop sports. There is need for partnership,” he said. “I urge Blue Eagles to ensure issues of good governance are undertaken and also bring results on the pitch.”
Blue Eagles chief administration officer William Nkhoma said the sponsorship would be transformative, helping the club operate successfully at the highest level of Malawian football.
Despite enjoying backing from sponsors including World Bet and Sana Cash and Carry, Nkhoma admitted operational challenges remain a constant battle behind the scenes — making Standard Bank’s intervention all the more significant.
“Despite having good sponsorship from World Bet and Sana Cash and Carry, operational challenges still remain,” he said. “That’s why we are grateful for this sponsorship. We are looking forward to a successful partnership that it will have a long time impact. This is a major milestone for the Eagles Football Club.”
The dramatic cash injection could prove decisive as Blue Eagles battle to fend off fierce title rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, Mighty Wanderers and Silver Strikers in what is shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested Premiership title races in recent memory.
