Board goes on campaign for NGO policy

NGO Board has gone full throttle to campaign for an NGO policy which will eventually culminate into a law to force all non- governmental organizations and civil society organizations register with the board.

Programs manager for NGO board Kamwana Muyaya on Friday was in Mchinji meeting with council and NGOs in the district in a bid to solicit views on the policy.

He said there was need to solicit views from the district council officials because they too work with the rural masses on various development programs and projects.

Muyaya when the policy is in place, all NGOs and civil society organizations will be forced to register with the NGO Board rather than Council for Non Governmental Organisations (Congoma) as is the case now.

He said this will help the NGOs have coordinated works for the advantage of the people they work for.

Happy Kayuni, a University of Malawi lecturer and one of the architects of the policy said the document will help promote accountability and transparency amongst the NGOs in Malawi.

Just a few weeks ago, NGO Board vice chairman Maziko Matemba warned all NGOs not registered with the board will be struck off but this was challenged by other lawyers who say the NGO Board has no legal mandate to do so.
