Boat capsizes in Lake Malawi, kills at least 4 business women

At least four women drowned when a boat capsized near Nkhotakota district in Lake Malawi, while at least 11 others were rescued, Malawi Police has confirmed.

The women who were 15 in number were heading towards Sungu Island in Mtenje village in the same district, for business.

Nkhotakota Police Spokesperson Williams Kaponda confirmed Nyasa Times that incident occurred on Sunday.

According to Kaponda, 11 women were rescued by some fishermen.

“They failed to rescue four women and with the help of the police after a search we managed to found only two missed bodies,” said Kaponda.

Adding that  “we are still searching for the two other bodies.”

Kaponda identified the body of the two women who were found as Ruth Nyoni 23 who hails from Kombo village in the area of senior chief Malengachanzi  and Cecelia Kambemba 32  of Phangwa village in the same senior chief and district of Nkhotakota.

He also identified the two missing body as Mphatso Ndelemani, age unknown but from Mtenje village and Chidaya Ayame age unknown from Vinjenje village both in senior chief Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota.

Meanwhile, the police said the cause of the accident was yet to be established.
