Boy dies after drowning: Boasted he knew to swim

A 17-year-old boy in Kasungu district died suddenly Thursday afternoon after he attempted to swim in Kabvunguti Dam in a show-off mode.

Police have identified the boy as Timothy Phiri from Chiteyeye Village, T/A Kaomba in the district and was a standard eight pupil at Chithiba Primary School.

The deceased, in a company of his friends, reportedly at around 1700hrs where he tried to swim but failed.

“When they reached the place, he boastfully told his friends that he knew how to swim. So he took off his clothes and jumped into the deep waters but he failed to swim. He helplessly drowned and sank before missing,” Kasungu Police Deputy Spokesperson, Barton Mathewe told Nyasa Times.

His body was found on the following day and postmortem results revealed that death occurred due to suffocation.

“We are advising parents and guardians to take close supervision of their children and tell them to desist from playing along rivers and dams as the rainy season continues,” said Mathewe.
