BSC ladies captain wins TNM’s ladies 2nd quarterly golf tourney: Mlawi ladies golf now attracting new members

Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) lady golf captain Connie Muguvu-Karuku led by example by posting 75 nett to win the club’s second quarterly ladies golf tournament sponsored by TNM on Saturday.

Her runner-up on nett 78 was veteran Margaret Mkwanda while Lilian Kawaza came third with nett 81.

To spice up the event BSC ladies golf section decided to include men and the main prize went to Mayamiko Kalizang’oma on 35 stableford points with Phillip Madinga on second with 32 points.

Also on board was a junior participation category for both girls and boys. The girls’ category was won by up-and-coming Priscilla Fiwa on nett 80, who counted oit another star in the making, Zita Rodrick with nett 80 while Kate Chapola was third on nett 87.

The boys’ category went to F. Rodrick with Carlo van de Werte on second and R. Salimu on third.

The women’s longest drive award on hole number 8 went to junior golfer Zita Rodrick while the nearest to the pin on number 14 was achieved by Immaculate Kachapira.

Men’s longest drive on hole number 6 went to veteran Charles Merrick and the nearest to pin on the 12th went to Alfred Chikale.

Captain Muguvu-Karuku applauded all participants for making the tournament exciting and paid tribute to lady golfers who have joined the sport following the hype by the TNM sponsorship.

She said ladies now have faith in the their competitions and the section continues to attract new members as well as junior girls.

For the second quarterly junior tournament there were six gils and five boys while the senior ladies who have joined lately since TNM came in are nine.

TNM’s Regional Manager David Nyirenda applauded the ladies for inviting their male counterparts as well as using the tournamenr as a springboard for the emergence of talent from the juniors.

Early this year, the premier mobile and ICT service provider unveiled a K3 million sponsorship package for BSC to enable lady golfers enjoy their game as they are mostly starved of regular sponsorship.

TNM has always supported ladies tournaments at BSC as well as the national team in international tournaments.

The mobile service provider also bankrolled the ladies East and Central Africa Regional Challenge which Malawi hosted at Lilongwe Golf Club last year, the first time-ever for Malawi to host a ladies international golf tournament.

Muguvu-Karuku thanked TNM for the sponsorship, saying it has contributed to the growth of ladies golf section.
