Businessperson Zimba wants universities to make mindset change and entrepreneurship mandatory course for every student

Renowned businessperson and philanthropist Charles Zimba says it is high time universities and colleges in the country consider making mindset change, risk taking, investments and entrepreneurship as mandatory courses for every student regardless of their field of study.

Zimba, who is the chief executive officer of SICO Holdings, made the remarks on Monday in Blantyre at the ongoing Research and Innovation Week at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS).

He noted that as a nation, we need to build a generation of business innovators who can create wealth but that needs to begin with what we inculcate in the minds of the students once they are in university.

“Everything around me changed in 2009 when I read a book by Robert Kiyosaki tittle Rich Dad Poor Dad. The book changed my mind about risk taking, entrepreneurship and investments things I barely learnt in the five years I studied Civil Engineering at MUBAS. Once my mindset changed, everything fell in place. I know mindset change is never an easy thing. I think we can look at our curriculum. We should start talking about risk taking, investment and entrepreneurship from first year until final year,” he said.

Zimba, however, hailed MUBAS administration saying the college has tremendously changed in terms on of infrastructural, curriculum and innovative development over the years.

The Research and Innovation Week event started on Monday this week. Under the theme “Research and Innovation for Wealth Creation,” the event has brought together academics, researchers, industry experts, students, and policymakers to explore how cutting-edge research and innovative solutions can contribute to Malawi’s economic growth.
