Cadecom for child-protection policy in Malawi

The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM), through its development arm of Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (Cadecom), has embarked on a series of consultations with relevant stakeholders within the Catholic Church to formulate a child-protection policy.

The recent consultative meeting was held in Mangochi where students and stakeholders from various child-related projects under ECM discussed different forms of abuse faced by children.

Speaking at the meeting, ECM child protection officer Chimwemwe Phiri hailed the meetings, saying they will enhance the capacity of the church to adequately respond to issues regarding child abuse.

“The significance of this policy is that it will provide direction for the clergy and the laity on issues of child protection,” said Phiri.

He said apart from the Mangochi meeting, other consultations were made at national level where input from all commissions under ECM were incorporated into the proposed the policy.
