Carlsberg Malawi revives BSC golf sponsorship with Monthly Mug

Carlsberg Malawi ended Blantyre Sports Club Monthly Mug drought by returning to the club with the first of six tournaments scheduled to run up to the next six months.

Senior Brands Manager for Carlsberg Malawi non-alcoholics, Twikale Chirwa, said they decided to consider the club because it was a strategic business partner to the brewery.

“I would like to sincerely thank Blantyre Sports Club for according Carlsberg Malawi an opportunity to come here,” Chirwa said, during the prize presentation of the inaugural event.

“I would like to thank Nestor Msowoya who was very instrumental in brokering the deal.”

Chirwa appealed to the golfers to support Carlsberg Malawi for it to consider a long term partnership with the club.

“If you support us you will be assured that Carlsberg will be here to stay,” he said.

BSC golf captain Medson Kalambule said the Carlsberg Monthly Mug sponsorship was a welcome development at the club.

“Carlsberg Monthly Mug is the first one at BSC after four years. We would like to welcome them back,” Kalambule said.

Gabriel Kambale underlined his top form on Saturday after winning the inaugural tournament.

Kambale had netted 69 to overcome a field of 66 golfers, 14 of whom were ladies.

He birdied twice on both front and back nine and his poor performance was one double bogey also on front and back nine.

Lilongwe golfer Melvin Donga also scored net 71 to finish second while Charles Merrick’s net 72 took him to the last podium position.

In subsidiary prize, BSC handicap Secretary Edwin Chipala won longest drive while Claude Hendrix was the nearest to the pin winner.

In the ladies section, Doreen Kavala emerged champion with Blantyre Sports Club Ladies Section captain Laura Moran settling for third and Ladies Golf Union of Malawi chairperson Carol Banda finishing third.

Banda also won nearest to the pin while Teri Amaro was the longest drive winner.

In another mini tournament sponsored by Coca-Cola reserved for Under-18 developmental golfers, Moses emerged the champion.

Kambale applauded Carlsberg for returning to Blantyre.

“It feels great to win Carlsberg sponsored Monthly Mug. It’s good that you are back because I know that at BSC you have a big clientele,” he said.

Carlsberg Malawi has for a long time been associated with BSC’s rival club Country Club Limbe, who have witnessed a sharp decline in the sponsorship and membership over the past decade.
