Cashgate: Malawi army general Odillo fired, Chief Secretary Ndilowe redeployed
Malawi President Peter Mutharika has fired Army Commander Henry Odillo , his deputy John Msonthi and appointed Major General Atanasio Maulana as the new military chief.
Mutharika fired General Odillo has been implicated in a latest audit report on the looting of millions of kwachas from Malawi government christened as the Cashgate scandal.
Odillo has been implicated as at the centre of the looting at the Malawi Defense Force (MDF).
The audit report done by the country’s National Audit Office (NAO) long time ago and along the one done by a British audit firm but has been under wraps by the former government of President Joyce Banda, also has Chief Secretary to the Office of the President and Cabinet Hawa Ndilowe as another culprit.
The audit report also implicates the Army Commander’s two deputies Lieutenant General Clement Kafuwa and Lieutenant General John Msonthi.
Ndilowe is mentioned to have been directly involved in the siphoning of a whooping K1billion from the office of President and Cabinet(OPC).
President Mutharika has since replaced Odillo, who came into the limelight in April 2012 for preventing an alleged coup when Bingu died, with Maulana.
Maulana, who was chief of military operations, will be deputised by Brigadier Griffin Supuni who has replaced John Msonthi.
Supuni has been based at the Malawi mission at the United Nations in New York.
Meanwhile, Mutharika has redeployed Chief Secretary to the Government Hawa Ndilowe to Tanzania as High Commissioner, according to a statement from the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) signed by acting chief secretary to the Government Willie Samute.
