Chakwera describes his election as ‘a win for Malawi, democracy and justice’

President- elect His Excellency Dr Lazarus Chakwera has described his electoral victory in the fresh elections as  “a win for democracy and justice.”

Chakwera wins rerun of Malawi’s presidential election in historic first

Chakwera’s victory was a result of months of determined street protests and a unanimous constitutional court decision that the May 2019 vote had widespread irregularities and could not stand.

He won with 2.6 million votes out of 4.4 million cast, defeating  incumbent Peter Mutharika with 58.57% of the vote in Tuesday’s poll, the electoral commission announced late on Saturday.

“My heart is bubbling with joy,” said Chakwera after being declared winner.

“I’m so happy I could dance all night,” Chakwera, former leader of the Malawi Assemblies of God church, told reporters. “This is a win for Malawians, a win for democracy.”

His supporters took to the streets of the Malawian capital, Lilongwe, sounding car horns and letting off fireworks.

Outgoing President Peter Mutharika, who had sought a second five-year term, called this new election flawed but has urged the country to “move on peacefully” and respect the presidency as a sacred office .

The MalawiHuman Right Commission, one of the observers, has said the election was peaceful and transparent.

I wish you well Mr. President. The nation has trusted your will to drive the sinking ship. You used UTM manifesto to sail off bay but the reality Malawi needs is to get growth and development we need.

The margin he has won with 58% is proof enough that indeed Mutharika won the 2019 election using FPTP because if you add Chakwera’s vote 36.something % and Chilima’s 20.something % roughly adds to this 58%. It is therefore clear that the biased courts robbed Mutharika of his victory. Mutharika is a peaceful man and has accepted it. But karma is a bitch. The way you have risen Mr Chakwera with your judas iscariot Chilima, the way you shall fall. Good luck!

This is mediocre thinking. If we are to use your reasoning, APM got 1.9 million in the nullified elections, Atupele got 200,000 plus, together they amassed 2.1 million. I believe most of the people that voted for APM and Atupele voted for them in the fresh elections. Except for Blantyre, this is very evident from the voting pattern in the Southern Region. During the fresh elections, if the nullified elections were not fraudulent, we would expect the APM/Atupele alliance to get around 2.1 million. Not surprisingly, they got 1.6 million, over 500,000 votes less. What does this tell us? The… Read more »

End of corruption and tribalism.

It’s time for DPP to reflect on their actions and tribal inclination. You cannot have a party full of tribal men and expect to win a national election. DPP was territorial. DPP depended on MEC rigging machinery until until their winning secrets were laid bare by the courts. It shows that even in 2009 Bingu did not get those votes clean but used the same MEC to twist figures. A warning to Tonse alliance: most notorious characters from DPP are with UTM, therefore in the Tonse alliance. Give them enough room they will destroy you.
