Chakwera Hails Kayelekera Comeback as Proof His Mining Reforms Work for Malawians

President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has declared the reopening of Kayelekera Uranium Mine as a direct result of his administration’s bold policy reforms and new mining laws, promising that this time the mine’s riches will translate into real benefits for Malawians.

Speaking at the colourful inauguration ceremony in Karonga on Tuesday, Chakwera said past mismanagement, political interference, and unfair deals robbed the country of jobs, infrastructure, and foreign exchange earnings from Kayelekera.

“We chased away those who messed up this mine and brought in Lotus Resources — a law-abiding, responsible company,” he said. “This would not have been possible without changing how mining is managed in Malawi.”

The President outlined a series of sweeping changes his government has made: overhauling the Mines and Minerals Act, creating a Malawian-owned mining company, establishing the Mining Authority to enforce compliance, and introducing the Sovereign Wealth Fund to ensure a portion of mining revenues is invested for future generations.

“These are not rumours. They are facts,” he stressed, adding that the Sovereign Wealth Fund will help secure a “Tsogolo Account” for every Malawian child.

Chakwera urged Lotus to honour the Community Development Agreement, employ more Malawians, and ensure corporate social responsibility delivers tangible projects in Karonga and beyond.

“We want this mine to end in the development of Malawi, in the future accounts of our children, and in the joy of Malawians,” he said, before officially declaring Kayelekera Mine open once again.
