Chakwera  holds Cabinet meeting as fuel hike protests hit Malawi

President Lazarus Chakwera is holding the last Cabinet meeting for 2020 today amid a wave of protests over the hiked fuel prices.

The police have been called in to quell the situation

State House has released photographs of some ministers arriving for the meeting at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

However, it is not known whether the issue of the protests, mostly in Blantyre and Mangochi would be tabled.

In most parts of Blahtyre, minibus services have been withdrawn and roads blocked by burning tyres, the situation remains tense as well in Mangochi.

Police were called in to put the situation under control when motorists were denied access to roads this morning.

Government is yet to comment on the matter.

The President warned the ministers  that he will use the reforms  – spearheaded by Vice-President Saulos Chilima with the aim of improving efficiency in public service delivery – to assess their quarterly performance.

Some of the ambitious targets in the reforms agenda include plans to establish secondary cities, boost power and water supply and reinvigorate the agriculture sector.

Under the reform targets in the agricultural sector, government intends to facilitate the establishment of a fertiliser manufacturing plant, turnaround the fortunes of the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc) to achieve financial sustainability, Chilima said.

According to the Vice-President, who is also Minister of Economic Planning and Development and Public Sector Reforms, the reform areas in the agriculture sector aim to increase volumes of fertiliser produced in Malawi while Admarc becomes a financially sustainable company which maintains its social objectives.

In the energy sector, the target is to make both Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi and Electricity Generating Company efficient.

Chilima added that government will introduce an automated payment system to deal with inefficiencies in pay management processes in MDAs, fight fraud and improve revenue collection.

President Chakwera, in June this year, said his first Cabinet was provisional and would be assessed after six months.

    1. Very true, there is too much ignorance in Malawi, but also the regulatory body need to be educating consumers about what is developing in the sector. In that way Malawians will be on the same page on what is tabled. In this case Malawians are left out empty with no ideas, Tonse must explain

  8. It’s gonna be hard for the president to fire any minister coz If it’s judging by performance then they have all failed miserably including the clueless President and showman Chilima.

For any minister who gets fired for poor performance, you should take both Chakwera and Chilima with you. Such a dismal performance. I voted for you hoping for a better Malawi. Now, one may say 6 months is too early to make any conclusive and accurate judgment on the government’s performance but it’s the government itself that put a 6months check point. It’s the President himself who placed 6 months to be a good enough point to asses performance so 6 months it is, the jury is out and the results show that the government has performed so very dismally and has been so underwhelming. You over promised for the 6 months and you have consistently under delivered.

The rot started when you employed friends, tribesmen and Azipongozi anu. You lost trust, you lost integrity and you lost justified yourselves to be the same as all these other politicians that Malawians are trying to get rid of.

A Chakwera so busy talking no sensible agenda of action – this not a talk show, Malawians are not idiots, they want results.

A Chilima so busy with showing off and promoting self image – this is not a beauty contest, Malawian sl have suffered enough in the hands of politicians.

See, all these years Malawians were made to believe that our problems are due to a weaker currency and this and that.. but now we know what our real problem is – You! Politicians. You are the enemies of the public. You work against the people. You are there to only make a future for yourselves, families and Azipongozi anu. You are Malawi’s worst demise.

Singing “uzadziwa anthuwa nchimodzimodzi angosiyana dzina, ali ndi njira zako”

      1. That the problem with our countrymen, this is the problem right here. Tolerating poor government performance coz of political party affiliations.

Mabvuto, let me tell you something, I voted for this government and my voting wasn’t based on party empathy but rather on manifestos presented to the public. You can call me whatever you want, it won’t change the fact that this government, judged by its own 6 months setting, it has failed miserably. The problem with you is that you are politically biased. You can’t stand in there in all honesty and claim that this government hasn’t made some really controversial cabinet appointments and deliberately for that matter. You can’t stand there, in your right mind of frame and tell me that the appointment of apongozi, out of the many potential Malawians, is justifiable.

One thing you must remember, Malawians didn’t impose a 6 month check point on this government, it volunteered itself to a 6 month scrutiny. Now the results are out and you say mwana wa a Dad.

Malawians are ravaging whilst these presidents are busy ‘looking busy’ on social media.

Malawians are struggling with unemployment whilst this government is focusing on friends and azipongozi.

Malawians are down on their last luck whilst these presidents are busy taking pictures in front of laptops and promoting their egoistic images.

What’s even more sad, is that we have people like you Mabvuto that are to clap for failure and call others names coz of party affiliations.

        Sad.

    1. Boma la Tonse Allowance ili pena pake kuwayamba dala anthu! Wina ndi uja kupanga ulendo waku Somaliland! Really! These are as clueless as Peter Mutharika. Bola Peter amongowerenga ma file mu office! Koma awa nde ayi! Kamwendo mmnjira! Kkkk!!!! Tiona mmene zithere!
