Chakwera signs older persons protocol, hailed by Manepo

President Lazarus Chakwera has signed the  Protocol to African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Older Persons in Africa (Older Persons Protocol).

President Lazarus Chakwera has signed the protocol

The Older Persons Protocol aims to strengthen regional protection for the rights of older persons, providing an opportune moment for older persons to enjoy their full rights and freedoms on an equal basis with other population groups.

The ratification of the Older Persons Protocol is needed to strengthen legal protection for the rights of older persons and empower them to champion their own rights, complementing other national strategies by the government and providing redress for the violation of the rights of older persons at national and regional level.

Malawi Network for Older Persons Organisation (Manepo) has since halied Chakwera for siging the protocol.

In a statement made available to Nyasa Times, the organisation states that the policy will be a catalyst for the provision of an eabling environment for the elderly in the country.

“As Malawi continues to grapple with disintegration of family structures, there is need to strengthen the polcy and legal formulation which will be a catalyst for the provision of an enabling environment for the elderly,” reads the statement in part.
