Chaponda authors book on Malawi development struggle

Renowned politician and former international diplomat George Chaponda has authored a book The Struggle for Economic Independence and Development in Malawi  (1960-2015) which will launches virtually at Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel  this  Friday.

Chaponda: The discussion and analysis in my book focusses on specific sectors of the economy

The book, published by Pandit Publications in India, analyses and discusses Malawi’s struggle for economic independence from the colonial era, through the single party state  to the modern times of democratic dispensation.

Chaponda, who is legislator for Mulanje South West, highlighted in an interview with Nyasa Times on Thursday that the path that Malawi has traversed in the struggle for both political and economic independence has not been remarkably different from other African States except for the pace.

“It is unfortunate to note that much as we have enjoyed political stability all along since the dawn of independence, our friends such as Rwanda and Angola who have had the opposite continue to flourish economically.

“The discussion and analysis in my book focusses on specific sectors of the economy that validate the country’s state of economic development which include agriculture, social development, education, health and economic development,” said Chaponda, adding that despite various interventions by government and assistance from development and collaborating partners over the years, Malawi remains one of the poorest countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

According to Chaponda, the two-hour book launch will be graced by members of the academia, politicians, businesspersons and students, among others. For more enquiries on the book people can call +265 881 40 39 78.

Dr George Thapatula Chaponda was born in Malawi at Chonde Village, Traditional Authority Mthiramanja in Mulanje District. He attended primary school at Blantyre Mission and was selected to Blantyre Secondary School (BSS) where he completed his secondary school education.

Chaponda obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) and Master of Arts with a major in History and Political Science, from Delhi University, India.  He further obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LLB Hons) with distinction from the University of Zambia, and then proceeded to pursue a postgraduate degree in Law at Yale University, United States of America. While in the USA, George lectured at Yale University. He then went on to obtain his Doctoral Degree of Business Administration from Exploits University, Malawi in September 2019.

  3. Koma zinazi..I have not read the book. But surely the period of analysis should have been extended to 2019, so that you tell the readers how you managed the maizegate scandal and why you were keeping hoards of money in the house instead of the bank…how you failed to empower malawians economically when you were in government…

  4. Inu mwaziikamo kuti you contributed to this Economic struggle through maize gate, otherwise this book is not relevant. Put urself that you are the cause of this Economic misery with your DPP regime.

    3. Exactly! The idiot has no sense of self-awareness whatsoever. If we didn’t have corrupt folks like him — folks so criminal-minded that they even torch whole buildings to destroy evidence— Malawi would by now be like Rwanda.
