Chess: MK400,000 up for grabs for Kumudzi Champions

The winners for the national finals of the Kumudzi Club Chess Championship to be held in Lilongwe on Saturday December 17, will be rewarded  with MK400,000 while runners-up will walk away with MK200,000 with MK100,000 going to the third placed team.

There are three teams, one each from the Northern, Central and Southern regions, who qualified after vigorous regional qualifiers.

The tournament shall be held at the sponsors’ premises, Kumudzi Eco Learning Centre situated along Bunda Road near Bunda College of Agriculture, now renamed Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR).

The finalists are Mchengautuwa from the North comprising Martin Mambulasa, Robert Ngwira, Emanuel Kaonga, Steve Gera, Francisco Wangupiri, Gift Kadaluka and Ernest Kampira while the Centre’s Sweeping Pawn has Alfred Chimthere, Aaron Phiri, Dan Maliro, Moses Mtumbuka and Patrick Gwede.

The South will be represented by Succhess fielding national team players such as Chiletso Chipanga, FM Gerald Mphungu, Mayamiko Zulu, Joseph Nyambalo, James Kamowa and Khwima Gondwe.

Succhess will miss the services of their junior player and talisman Yebo Sanga, who is represenring Malawi at the African Schools Championship in Lusaka, Zambia.

The Kumudzi Club Chess Championship is seen as a positive response to revive a chess culture in all the regions.
