Chiefs speak against removing presidential powers
Traditional leaders say they are against calls from some quarters for President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera to trim his presidential powers.
They are also describing it as insane calls for President Chakwera to resign owing to the economic downturn of the country, saying this is a global phenomenon.
Senior chiefs from Nsanje said this on Thursday after meeting President Chakwera at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre.
Senior Chief Malemia said instead, the chiefs assured President Chakwera of their full support, saying the president’s development agenda is impressive.
“People should allow the President to govern without any disturbance, the issues of economic challenges being highlighted for example, are a global concern,” he said.
The traditional leader said the chiefs commended President Chakwera for implementing a K69 billion Marka- Bangula railway rehabilitation project, which they say will boost the country’s economy.

Chiefs are against the concert of the president. The president himself promised malawians that he will remove some presidential powers when he ascend to presidential position because some of the powers are not all that necessary and are hindering good governance in the country. What the chiefs could have done was to supporting the president by identifying these good governance hindering presidential powers for the president to act. Since money is the source of evil, the chiefs have decided to cheat the president that there are no presidential powers that are bad, very shameful.

The chiefs have a role to play as their positions are permanent in nature, and when it comes to issues of governance they should be in the forefront reminding the government to fulfill what was promised not encouraging the government to break what was promised. Chakwera promised to reduce the Presidential powers while the very same chiefs heard all this. Why today chiefs are speaking against it yet then they were quite. That’s why Chiefs may not be respected
The so called chiefs are insane and they do not know what Malawians are passing through, Maybe its because mafumu anthu ambiri amakonda ziphuphu, maphunziro mulibe kapena tinene kuti ndi mbuli that’s why they are praising this weak and corrupt president, the guy who doesn’t consider the lives of poor Malawians. Chakwera doesn’t know what he’s doing, the guy has no idea on how he can change the country.

I support what the chiefs have said, that Presidential power should not be trimmed.

Yes we respect your views our dear chiefs. But one thing that you should know is that it is high time Malawians have been blaming you that you are influenced by politicians. Issue of reducing powers is not coming from anyone else but the president himself since it is what he told Malawians during the campaign together with his vice president. So avoid commenting on matters that were publicly made likewise calls for resignation in two years. This too came from himself whereby he said “if I do not change things in the way they should be within two years then I will resign”. So do not blame anyone else if anything others said silence is golden. I liked what George Phiri (the political Lecturer from UNILIA) said the ball is in the hands of our President whereby should come in the open and tell Malawians that these are the areas I was referring to that when they don’t change I would resign but see and judge for yourself if these(referring to what is going to present) are the same the way they were only then Malawians will understand vetter what actually he was referring to by his statement of resignation. Finally, one thing of a big lesson my fellow Malawians right from 2019 to date is that let us be careful with what we say and do otherwise they will backfire one day. Long live democracy and God bless Malawi and our leader.
